[Req] Auto run fix

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 11:28 am

Im not talking about sprint "alt" im talking about run "capslock"

I dont have the default run "caps lock" on. So i use "Shift" when i want to run. Now if i run to a door and it loads, the game remembers that ive held down "shift" so when i come out the other side of the door, its on auto run again. this is annoying, can someone fix this?

This is intentional. If you hold shift, or have caplock on, when you enter a menumode (Any menu, pause menu, or loading screen) if you change the state of the run button, i.e. release shift or toggle capslock, it does not register it. To turn this off, simply hit capslock (to put you in walk mode) hit tab to open the choice menu, then hit capslock again, and close the choice menu. The game will not register it being turned off, and you will again be in the normal walking state.

I just searched and dug this thread up.

I was wondering if there is a modder or mod that can be "knocked up" to force always run "off" or "on" ... so that when I exit caves or pause game etc always run doesn't switch itself back on.

I prefer always run off and to hold a key to run but walking by default, if anyone has the know how or already know of an existing mod that can force walking so running is hold key and always remembers it would be great.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you walk every where and only want to use run by holding down a key? If so, hat support is already in the game. Map 'Always Run' to a letter key. Use that key to toggle between running and sprinting. When you want to run, hold down the shift key. You'll start running or walking depending on what state you were in. To sprint, hold down shift+alt. This is the method I use and it works just fine.

Yes thats what I want, walk by default and run when holding run key, everything you describe is what I use, but ... if you notice the game doesn't "remember" and you have to double tap the always run key to walk again, changing scenes, coming out of caves, alt tabbing and other such things always puts always run back on again, and you have to tap the key again to stop it.

Im asking for that to never be forgotten once its on IE always run = off ... always off.

Best way to explain is always run key is tapped so I walk and then hold run key to run, I then go into cave, or exit a cave, I move forward running is back on, so, I have to tap always run key to walk by default again ... it happens allot.

Hmm, I don't believe my game works that way. I'll have to try it when I get back to my gaming machine. The only time I have to worry about it is when I start the game, I'm in run mode even when my last save was in walk mode.

Please try it out as maybe its a bug?

I installed the game on purchase vanilla 1.2 and then went to 1.3 & 1.3 LAA ... all of which have had new game created with new characters with news saves through each, and every time I find the game switching back to always run exiting caves and flipping screens and changing scenes, I just assumed it was the game and that it needed a mod.

All I know is if I enter a city, exit city, enter a house, exit house, and caves and anything where it has to load a new scene in most cases I walk forward and run is back on again (which was off before).

Wouldnt mind if anyone else can confirm.

What happens if you change "bAlwaysRunByDefault=1" to "bAlwaysRunByDefault=0" in SkyrimPrefs.ini?

Okay, I just tested it. Here is my key mapping:

V - Toggle Always Run
R - Auto-Move
E - Activate
Alt - Sprint
Shift - Run

When I load a save game, I am always in run mode, even if the save was made while in walk mode. I always hit V to put myself back into walk mode. I walk everywhere.

Standing right in front of a door, if I do the following, I get the result listed.

Scenario #1:
Load save game.
Hit V to enter walk mode.
Hold down W to start walking towards the door.
Keep holding down W and hit E to activate the door.
When the screen turns black, release W and E.
Wait for the load screen.
Once through the door, hit W to start moving again.
I am walking.

Load save game.
Hit V to enter walk mode.
Hold down Shift+W to start running towards the door.

Wait for the load screen.
Once through the door, hit W to start moving again.
I am walking.

Try the INI tweak I mentioned.

Thanks. That is one less thing I now need to do every time I start the game.

I hope Bethesda fixes this bug in the next patch. Sometimes the game switches to auto-run mode in the middle of combat when I go into a menu, and by the time I realize that holding shift like I normally do is making me walk and I'm unable to sprint, I'm already dead. It's very frustrating. I don't even use always run mode; I disabled the ini option for having it enabled each time I start the game already.

What happens if you change "bAlwaysRunByDefault=1" to "bAlwaysRunByDefault=0" in SkyrimPrefs.ini?

Ok for the life of me I did not remember or see this entry to try, set it to =0 and ran game and "so far" its staying put. I wonder if =1 means your key press can get over-ridden at times and put back to always run becuase that's what I was experiencing and all the time bAlwaysRunByDefault=1 in my config.

Well I will play further and see if it happens again, so far so good, yet another small yet becomes large annoyance ticked off the list

Moonraker, try the above and see how it goes, it may still show up but report if it does after trying the ini change.

SkyrimMonkey, I already had that ini setting disabled; that was the one I was referring to in my previous post. It works as far as not enabling the setting every time you load the game, but doesn't fix the problem of the game auto-setting always run during gameplay.

Are you guys sure it just wasn't user error or bad keyboards. It sounds like you guys may have been accidentally hitting caps lock. Was caps lock still your default toggle, because my game has never had any of those issues and I walk everywhere. However, the first thing I do in my game is remap the toggle run/walk key away from caps lock (V for velocity). I also never had the ini setting before, so it shouldn't have any effect.

That's a firm "no" ... not user error. I would know if I was doing such a thing ....

It seems clear its intermittent and that not all seem to experience, but all I can say is for me it was since game install and onwards and before any mods too.

Just "decided" to be on full run again at various times.
