Bethesda Why I Didn't Buy Skyrim...

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:27 am

What I don't get is that my gf (whose buying the game for me) told me that the PC version costs more than the Xbox version. I've never heard of that happening. Frankly, I think they need to offer a crossplatform product. No physical PC copies, only download, which could then be price reduced because they don't have to worry about production/distribution. All physical console copies would then come with a key for PC download, at the standard price.

But that's in a world where companies aren't greedy. YES, this is one of the few games that has $60 worth of content if not more, BUT, there's really no need to charge customers for plastic, packaging, and distribution costs when they can simply download the product electronically at virtually no cost. Pass on the savings.

This was something we juggled in a discussion in our multi-gaming group. Why they don't have a digital copy at a much reduced price. Yes you're paying for server bandwidth and other support related costs... but it should be significantly cheaper to offer than a boxed copy. Perhaps we'll see it one day... but if they're buying it up at full price now, why would they change it?

meh... this will likely be the last game I buy anyway... they are getting to expensive......

but you know why the price tag went up.

everybody has to have every line of everygame voiced.

it costs monet to do this.

I would not have cared to much if the game was just dialogued on a text screen instead of every line voiced.

A movie for $10 = $5/hr
Skyrim for $60, I'm so far 22hrs into it and nowhere even remotely close to finishing it = $2.73/hr
I'm guessing I'll get about 200hrs into it before taking my first long break from the game, if it holds to the same pattern as Oblivion. That means $0.30/hr.

It seems like an entirely fair price to me. *shrug*

Games were 49.99 for how many years? I've been gaming since Pong and Intellivisin, and for a long times game prices didn't increase with the times.

Now Digital ames should be cheaper, 49.99 at least since they do not have to pay for packaging, the disc, and other fees. 59.99 or a digital copy is a bit unbalanced. Even server costs to distribute would cost that much to warrent it.

However the economy is higher and the stadard is now 59.99.

Not all games cost that much. Halo Evolution was released at 39.99. Some other new titles 49.99.

I know (because I'm a nerd and I keep my checkbook ledgers back to the beginning of time) that I paid $40 for Diablo when it came out in 1996. According to http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=40.00&year1=1995&year2=2011, $40 in 1996 is worth $57.72 in 2011. I'm cool with Bethesda rounding up.

I support the OP's sentiment totally.

You hear about piracy concerns all the time. One way to avoid all that would be to set the price to something reasonable, not something that just makes you think twice.

Yes, you zealots (remember that I am a big supporter of Bethesda too)might say that I can get tons of enjoyment out of this game, much more than others. But that is besides the point. Would Bethesda make a worse game if it were to be priced at $50 or lower?

And idiots who ask the OP to get a job didn't read the post - he can afford all three gaming platforms, so he is not poor. Neither am I.

Thank you for addressing this intelligently and fairly. I appreciate the comment whether you agree or not, it was a thought through response.

old NES games used to be like 70 bucks.

NES games were never $70... at least not in New York where I bought them.

Games were 49.99 for how many years? I've been gaming since Pong and Intellivisin, and for a long times game prices didn't increase with the times.

You're right. The price increases were gradual over the years. The $49.99 cost was standard for quite a few years now back into the 90's. It's only recently within the last two years that we've seen the increase to $59.99. You're also right about the increase in the economy such as gas for $3.42 here... and such. But I was one of those people that refused to pay $4.00 a gallon when for a week or two it hit that here. Call me traditional, call me whatever you like. I don't mind some increases in price if they're truly justified. But the industry is making this pricing increase across the board for one reason... they can. I'm not going to argue that this game may have more content than any other out there. I believe it. But that's not justification for me.

I have a job. I make almost $100,000 year with my overtime (base pay is $72,000). That is of course irrelevant and the principle is what I'm discussing. Which has already been disregarded as I thought it would in the first couple replies.
Ah yes, the Internet where everyone tosses out their income and expects us to take it as fact. Could be true, could be a lie. A simple I have a job would have covered it though.

My question is this. You say you considered the D2D purchase but had some issue because the regular price was $60 anyway. Why didn't you just do it?

Or go to Amazon's buy one get one pre-black friday sale and get buy one get one. There are two choices for PC, you get Rage for $47.08 (marked down from you demon $60) and get Skyrim for $30.

Problem solved, post how you like the game in a few days since you'll get free shipping.

If you were a millionaire, would you buy a bag of potato chips for thirty dollars?

If it was a bag of potato chips that was I could eat/be satisfied with for about 10-15 times the amount than I could for a $3 bag? Yes, yes I would.

Heck, I don't even have to be a millionaire. If I felt like eating nothing but chips for a day, and there happened to be a 50 ounce bag of chips for $30, I'd probably buy it tomorrow.

Why do you feel no problems or accept that console games are $60 and you buy them for that, but won't buy PC games for the same price?

Ok. Fine. I have no problem with this. Stick to your principles and don't buy one of the greatest games ever made. But you're out of your mind if you think it makes any difference whatsoever.

Frankly I think for the product that Bethesda is created, $60 is a bargain. 300+ hours of gameplay for $60? .20 cents any hour? The CoD MW3 campaign is what, 8 hours? TOPS? These people deserve their money. They've produced something geniunely astounding and I hope they make enough money to buy 15 yachts to park in a pond out front of their office building.

Poor, poor anology, as 60 bucks for a videogame these days does not equate to 30 dollars for a bag of potato chips.

You are complaining because a PC game costs the same as its xbox equivalent? Um if anything the PC version should be worth MORE, considering you can add mods, make the detail go higher than you can on xbox, more easily download dlc, and numerous other things that just make it better than an xbox game.

The amount of content justifies the $60 price. There are plenty of companies that release short single player games for the premium price but this kind of rant is so misdirected. Bethesda is not one of them.

Sorry, but you're complaining about ten dollars? And you say you make 100K (with overtime) a year? This game is worth more than $60 with all the content you're getting. I spent about 600 hours on oblivion, and will most likely spend around the same amount of time on Skyrim. I don't know of anything else that gives you a whopping 600 hours of entertainment for a mere $60.

For the OP: buy it at Ebay. Problem solve. Games nowadays takes years to develop so $60 bucks is reasonable considering that fact that it was made in USA and unlike China labor is expensive here. Also, you get to play the game for many months, heck, many years(look at morrowind) so in the long run is a great bargain entertainment that beats the overpriced movie theaters.

Two things are going to happen before anyone reads this:

1. It's going to be disregarded by the community as a whine and not read
2. What's said is going to be justified by those who made the purchase

... neither of which help me. But I feel it needs to be said to the company should anyone care to read it.

Now to set the stage, I've watched this game for a LONG time. I juggled a pre-order on it for many months and just waited to see. I'm now seeing the rave reviews and friends comments and want the game even more now. Except for one thing... the price.

Now I get it. The social and industry norm now is that PC gamers buy games at console pricing. All part of an inflated market for those trying to make an extra dollar. But I can assure you that I have NO plans to EVER purchase a PC game for $59.99. I wont do it, and wont even give it a second thought. I wont go into the details other than I've been gaming for YEARS when new top titles released at $19.99 on CD-ROM and 5 1/4" disk. I saw the industry adjust with the times and slowly go to $29.99 then $39.99 and then stick for many years at $49.99. This new "concept" of paying now another $10 and often times for digital downloading is absurd and frankly disappointing that you'd think me that stupid.

So Bethesda... plan on something soon. Drop the price to a normal respectable PC price ($49.99) and I'll gladly pay it. I have every intentions on owning this game when the price is right. I want very much to experience the game and enjoy it... but I absolutely refuse to contribute to the inflation. Now of course the argument could be made that with my IGN account I could have purchased it from D2D during the pre-order period for $47.00. Trust me I wish I had. But the thought of it originally being a full $60 pricetag from the start bothered me. We're now seeing EA doing it, Activision, and others. Bethesda is one of the latest to fall victim to the "norm".

I guess I should also say that I own a PS3 and 360 (among almost every other console since the Atari). I've paid full price to include $59.99 for console games for a long time... but I accept that for consoles. I don't for PC's. Again I wont go into the reasons because I don't want a flame war. But Bethesda... please drop this price soon so I can enjoy the game!

You didn't buy the game at $47 dollars because you don't like the original price of $60? I'm not believing it.

It's ok for you to pay for the $60 dollar price tag on a console, but not on pc? Is that just because of the digital download?
If so, can't you buy physical copies of the game?

Also, think of it like I do:

Cost vs. fun time. If I get just 30 hours of play time out of this game (that's lowballing it HARD), that means I paid
$2 and hour for an engaging experience. Where I'm from $2 an hour for fun is impossible to come by (where fun is
paid for obviously).

Take movies for example. A 2 hour movie @ 8 dollar ticket= $4 an hour. Not to mention gas, and buying my womans
ticket and snacks.

It is called price discrimination (google it). You obviously don't belong into the "I want it NOW" segment. So you will wait until the price drops, then buy it. Good for you! But I can tell you, Bethesda makes much more money this way and it certainly won't change.

See? Today we learned something.

Edit: Oh, something else you maybe want to think about: When games came out on cd, they didn't cost half as much in production than today. Just sayin...

The reason why many people feel digitally distributed games should cost less is because there is less of a production value. There is no shelf space, there is no cost of CDs or packaging. eBooks cost less that print books 95% of the time (for the Kindle at least, that's what I have), why not digital games?

$60 is indeed a lot for a game, however, I think Skyrim is worth it.

Also, with game prices raising to the new standard of $60, I am being more and more picky about what I buy for full retail. I was going to buy Rage, but decided to get skyrim instead. If prices were $40, then i would have gotten both.

Never mind that I got the collecters edition of Skyrim...
