[WIP][REL] Better Whiterun

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:44 am

This is a WIP of my Whiterun replacer. It significally improves the textures. I have done most of the wood stuff and will move on to the stones. But it already looks pretty impressive, so I thought I'd share my work and hope for feedback.

Thanks! Your work on Morrowind in great, and so are these textures, so I can't wait to see what else you're going to make.

It's utterly ridiculous how much better this looks than the default.

Why Bethesda couldn't just do it right in the first place is so baffling.

Actually there is just a bug that prevents the game from loading the highest quality textures right now. PC players are stuck at console level instead of the larger nicer ones we were promised. So I'd wait to replace them until they fix the bug, then you can see how good they actually are.

Is this confirmed? Where?

The unpacked .dds textures are almost all 512*512. Mine are *1024 to *2048. There is no bug, the textures just are that bad. If there are better textures, they must come with a huge patch from Bethesda. Either way, you're most probably better off sticking to replacers like this ;).

Where are Beths comments about this? I have seen nothing official. As stated above the textures in the files are only 512x512..that's not hi-res...now if they are releasing a hi-res pack..that could be true..but that's not a bug like you said..that just means..they aren't there.

I'm pretty pessimistic about Bethesda releasing better textures. They only said "PC will have higher-res textures", which to me implies community work. They didn't specifically say they'd deliver better textures and I don't believe they will. But I'll be happy if I'm proven wrong

This is the problem I always have with tex mods, they change to much the original look. Clearly the mods tex are higher res and more detailed but I don't like all the warelines, looks like the wood is rotting almost, I prefer the smoother and far less weathered look of the original textures, I just wish they did not get blurry up close.

Well I do remember Todd saying that they initially make their textures at a very high resolution and then re-size them, and this was in relation to PC having higher res textures.

Hopefully they do release them that way if they already have them. Maybe it's just taking some time to get them prepared for release (like the CK)

512x512 is not high-res by any definition. I would like it if they would make closer to original textures available to us.

In your slant comparison screenshot, I can't tell which one is new and which one is old. The only difference I see is that the top image shows the house before the wood started rotting, tbh. I'm assuming the top half is the new textures?

Something to consider. The more people keep insisting on doing things like this, the less likely Bethesda will be inclined to EVER fix things themselves. Why pay all this money for a AAA title and then have to become their unpaid development team? We were promised higher resolution textures. Instead of doing the work ourselves, MAKE THEM DO IT.

Never said it was.

What I was saying is that they originally make the textures in a high resolution (probably something like 2048 or maybe bigger) and then they shrunk them down before release (for consoles and such) and they are still preparing the high res ones for the PC.

Well that's my speculation at least.

Good luck with that one, although i completely agree with you i just don't think there are enough people who put the effort into it to get them to do it nor do i think bethesda cares enough these days about the PC version to do it...but i hope i am completely wrong here boy do i hope.

They didnt do it for Oblivion, FO3 or FO:NV though so i wouldnt hold my breath.. And yes im also pretty sure proffessional artists doesnt work at these low resolutions, would've been a minimal amount of work for the previous games too, but they didnt bother.

On-topic looks pretty good Biont :)
