Buying the house in Riften

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:33 pm

Hey guys!

I'm going through my second playthrough of the game, this time i decided i wanted to do an Theif/Assasin Bosmer and i decided i head directly to Riften just after i killed the first Dragon outside Whiterun(I hardly spent any time in that city on my first character).

I wanted to buy the house in Riften, read a bit about it and noticed you'd have to do the Skooma quest in order for the Jarl to offer you the Thane title and later on the option to buy a house in the city, well.. i did the quest and the follow ups but i don't get the option to buy a house or become the Thane.

Do anyone know if there is any other quest that makes the option to buy the house pop up when speaking to the Jarl?

What do i have to do?

Thanks in advance!

That is not entirely correct, as you have to
Spoiler
stop the skooma smugglers. You start this miscellaneous quest by talking to Wujeeta and helping her in the Riften Fisheries. Continue as the game tells you
as well as become a hero of the Rift.

I have done that quest, that's why i think it's so odd that the option doesn't become available, but i'll try doing some random quests for the citizens and hope it helps..

Thanks for the replies.

You need to do a few Rift quests and return to the Jarl. Be careful if you're on console, buy the house from the steward, talk to the Jarl, then do your upgrades. If you purchase upgrades before becoming a Thane, her dialogue option will not appear sometimes.

You need to do that one and also a certain number of other minor Riften quests as well to qualify. Just talk to as many people as you can in Riften and collect up small quests, like all the merchants in the market and the people in the inn. When you've done enough the jarl will initiate a new conversation with you when you talk to her about how she has heard of your good deeds.

I think you have to do 3 additional "help" quests.

The easiest are:
Spoiler

Talk to the Jarl's son and he will ask you to run and get his sword.
Talk to the reguard on the bridge (or will be out at the stables) and he asks you to talk to Saphhire to clean up his debt.
Talk to the old lady in the Alchemy shop and run her errand for her.

Additionally. When the Jarl finally offers the title, and gives you permission to buy the house from her steward, buy the house, but immediately talk to the Jarl again. If you leave the keep and come back, she'll not offer the title to you. That was a mistake I made a while back. I forget where I read that, but it works. As to helping people, giving coin to the beggar in the market counts.

Typically, I help people around the market (the beggar, as mentioned above, the blacksmith, the fresh food vendor, the Jarl's son, and Kimmek (in Ivarstead... I mean, I'm usually heading up to High Hrothgar anyway at that point). You need to help 5 people in the Rift, as well as complete the Jarl's quest before she'll offer you the title.

There are about 30 different quests you can do in the Rift to gain favour with the Jarl, not counting the Skooma quest, which is 3 parts.

I've done all the skooma quests, but the steward doesn't even offer a house -- yet alone the jarl offering thane and telling how I have to help people and have a house.

I just did this yesterday. I dealt with the Skooma problem, the quest will update to ask you to speak to the Jarl. Prior to this I had done a few quests for Riften citizens, including giving a gold coin to the beggar (to get the Gift of Charity bonus), recovering Mjoll's sword, getting gold ore for Madesi and I can't remember what else. In that conversation she'll suggest you see her steward and purchase a house before giving you the title. Do so. And as SteamCanuck mentioned, talk the the Jarl immediately for the quest to proceed normally.
As you might have guessed by now, the quest is bugged. I made the mistake of visiting the house, then went back to see the Jarl. Unfortunately the quest broke there - according to the wiki the act of visiting Honeyside before talking to the Jarl causes this problem.
