Crashes When I Try to Bind a weapon

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:20 am

Whenever I go into my Pip-boy and try to bind a weapon to any of the 8 keys, it crashes to the desktop. This started happening out of nowhere when I was playing one day and have no idea how or why it started. Now I'm stuck with half my keys bound with mediocre weapons and am dreading the constant Pip-boy-to-swap-weapons strategy... Any thoughts guys?

This same thing just happened to me this morning. I have played this game for over 350 hours with no key binding crash issues until now. Here's my story . . .

I had just finished Dead Money, and when I returned to the Mojave and retrieved my old weapons, I could not re-bind them to my number keys without crashing. Tried maybe 5-6 times, crashed everytime. I did not have any key bind crashes while playing Dead Money. After searching the forum for help (and only finding your thread, spud), I thought I would try some experimenting with re-loading of previous saves.

I reloaded a save just before I exited the courtyard in Dead Money. I tried a few weapon changes and key bindings with no crashes. So I exited the courtyard and returned to the abandoned bunker. Here I also changed a couple of weapons and re-binded some, without a crash. I then exited the bunker back to the Mojave, returned to Novak to get my Ratslayer, etc. and now, magically, I seem to be able to rebind without crashing.

So, I think my issue has resolved, but I don't know how or why. Maybe for you, spudwinkle, try the re-load/re-bind thing. Maybe the game engine just needs to be nudged in the right direction. Who knows? My fingers and toes are crossed because I got more gaming to do.

Ok, well i don't have Dead Money yet, so what your saying is I should try to reload an old save and then rebind? how far back would I have to go exactly in my saves? This is such a strange problem I wonder if I can even fix mine the way you did.

So it looks like it worked, but kind of from a different method. I zoned into The Tops to deal with Benny, and as I left and received my weapons, I attempted to rebind figuring it would crash, lo and behold it didn't and I was able to rebind everything! So that seems to be a method worth trying for anyone else who comes across this annoying bug.

I would have suggested to go back to a save where you knew changing the key binding wasn't causing a crash. In my case, that was easy to know - I was playing the DLC. In your case, and in mine before the DLC, I would not have known which save to go back to. So for me, some type of re-load/re-binding manipulation solved the issue. Interesting that your method of entering an area where the game removes your weapons also worked. It is a perplexing problem and it can't be just the two of us that have experience it.

So it sounds like the glitch might be related to where the game takes away your weapons and then gives them back, which happens in the DLC and in several of the New Vegas locations.

For others with this bug, the experiments conducted by spudwinkle and rcb (N=2) show that entering a casino that removes weapons and leaving the location again, or, re-loading the DLC save prior to the glitch, rebinding weapons and leaving the DLC, seem to resolve the issue. Then again, it might be the phases of the moon.
