Crashing After Opening Cinematic

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:16 am

Hi folks,

After having no luck getting help from Bethesda, I thought I'd turn to the kind people here. Like so many of you, I can't play what should be an amazing game that I paid good money for (got collector's edition).

My laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio that beats all the sysreqs (I know it will work on this system as one of the online reviewers for the game actually has my system and used it to review this game).

I have not modded my game other than to get the Classic Pack the game came with.

I can install it, patch it, and start it up...then when the roulette wheel starts to spin on the loading/pause screen (after the opening cinematic plays) it crashes after a few rotations of the ball in the wheel.

I get a Windows error message (running Win7 64bit):
"FalloutNV has stopped working. WIndows is checking for a solution."

After a minute, the message is replaced by this one:
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Anyone found a way to beat this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the exact same issue, and not even remotely the same setup.

Win 7 64 bit
core i7 3.4 ghz sandy bridge
16GB ram
Asus Nvidia GTX580

I obliterate all needed specs, but game crashes at first load screen like OP said. Any ideas?

I managed to fix my issue. I have an Asus Nvidia GTX580. I installed the GamerOSD and ASUS SmartDoctor that came with the card. Apparently they cause a conflict because once I uninstalled those two programs, it now runs like a dream.

I have been having the same issue with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Fallout 3 was working wonderfully for about a year and all of a sudden the problem started and the only way to "temp fix" it was to reload the video card drivers everytime I restarted my computer. Since then I have replaced everything in my computer except the case and I still have the same problem. I've tried every fix and reinstalling. I just like the game so much I can just live with it for now.

I have found FO3 and FONV to be codec sensative. Try Nirsoft's InstalledCodecs utility, This allows you to disable/enable codecs without uninstalling/reinstalling them: try disabling all codecs EXCEPT those from Microsoft, , Fraunhofer, and Spiro. And the cool thing is - you just reenable them if it makes no difference or it causes other problems. Also post your dxdiag if problems continue.

Was having a similar problem, which just started out of nowhere incidentally, anyway I did as tacitus59 suggested, disabled almost all codecs and game worked, then enabled a block from a certain company, game worked again after a while got to a stage where it crashed again, so knew the problem was in that block somewhere, turns out it was this one.
