Game keeps opening off screen, conventional fixes not workin

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:24 am

Last night, I was playing New Vegas (Or more like, trying to resolve the massive amounts of choppiness/graphical lag I was getting for no apparent reason) and I kept having to quit the game to change the more advanced settings. When I went to start the game one of these times, it shot off screen. Now I've handled this before with other programs. Normally, holding down the windows button and pressing arrow keys until the game screen is aligned with the monitor, or pressing Alt+Spacebar for the 'move' function and then using the arrow keys, would solve this problem.

Not with New Vegas.

I don't know what the heck is going on with that game, but I can't use -any- of the windows hotkey fixes to realign the screen. It won't go into windowed mode with alt+enter either, and Shift+Right click doesn't bring up the taskbar menu. To make things even better, I just threw out $10.00 on Steam buying an expansion pack that I'll never get to play if I don't get this fixed (And if the game's unbearable stuttering on even the lowest settings doesn't take a hike)

Has anyone -ever- run into this exact problem? How did you fix it (Assuming you fixed it)?

Hmm, I haven't encountered this problem, but this is what I would try in your shoes -

First, and I'm not sure I'd be real optimistic about it working, I'd try playing in windowed mode - everytime I start my client in windowed mode with a resolution smaller than my desktop the game window resets to the top left corner of my screen (I know this because it bothers me that I always have to drag it down and center it).

If that didn't work, I might try setting a custom resolution in in the ini with a really wide horizontal resolution, thinking I could maybe see enough of the window to grab it and pull it back into view.

Also, once the game is running in windowed mode, I might try opening the task manager, minimizing the game via right click, and then maximizing it - for me, that opens the game fullscreen with a black box filling in any empty pixels outside the game window. You could play that way, but my hope would be that after quitting it would reset its position and I could get it working right.

Worst case scenario, reinstalling video drivers might be an option, or screwing around with my desktop resolution and THEN starting the game might trick it into opening on-screen.

I did get it to work in windowed mode, but for some reason I can't click and drag the window at all. I can't select the window or right click the icon on the taskbar without locking my cursor back into the game again. I also can't minimize/maximize the window when it's open, and I can't use alt+enter to hotkey it. Nor can I use alt+tab when in game (even if paused) to jump back to desktop - just other open programs.

Basically the game window is just 'stuck' where it is. I tried reinstalling it, but something about Steam just makes that move rather useless.
