6 hour post-patch 2.01 playtest results

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 6:11 pm

Played the game for 6 hours straight. Some long (2 second) pauses noticed at first but no great drop in framerate after 6 hours.

Save file sizes dropping slightly (7147 to 7125) but then increasing slightly, but hovering around the 7mb area.

Loading times for entering buildings seems to have increased (taking 15 seconds). Seems much longer than before but fair trade-off for lag reduction.

Texture memory definitely improved. The drain water in Whiterun now not turning black, and item models holding their high-res quality longer than before the patch.

All-in-all the PS3 is running Skyrim pretty smoothly after a long session and (so far) deserving of it's 9.5 score (IGN)

Blessings of Kynareth upon you.

I didn't have any problems either when my save file was at 7mb. Just wait until it reaches 10, 11, 12...etc
Mine is at 13mb right now, and the lag is absolutely terrible. I simply can't enter solitude or any other large cities, because it turns into a flip book of frames...like 3-7 frames per second.

This is your results.

You may just have been lucky.

People are still having problems after the patch.

I don't think we should draw conclusions yet. And 7Mb isn't much. I didn't start lagging before around 10Mb.

I'm curious to see whether the patch will prevent huge save files and the ensuing lag from happening in the first place.

We need a test subject! Someone will have to start from scratch and put 60 hours into a new character, then report on save file size and framerate.

Any volunteers? :)

Can you actually buy anything from the shops or buy spells from anyone? It just doesn't work for me

Yeh you may be right there. It's still 'early days' in stress testing.

As 'Last Dual' says below you. We need someone to test a new game and character from scratch to see if the save files keep increasing 'pre-patch style'.

As I said. My save file is up and down. Which may or may not be a good sign. At least it didn't get higher with each save as before.

Blessings of Talos go with you.

Played for 4 Hours still lagging like hell and I have even more bugs. I cannot buy or sell to any merchant. This game does not deserve its 9.5 score. More like 4.0 at this state.

Yes, Rob. I haven't encountered any problems with merchants during the 6 hour test.

Has anyone tried a new game yet and played for several hours to see if its stable? I wouldn't mind starting over, Ive got 150+ hrs, but if i can start over and the lag is fixed, i wouldn't mind starting over because most of the games immersion was ruined by the frame rate drop.

Im at 50 hours, had some slight lagging so I reinstalled the game (no patches). Seems to work ok now, for the past 5 hours.

My save is only at 8.5mb though. I wont download this patch unless my game gets totally broke.

I also own the pc version though, so not too worried :P I plan to start a new character there eventually. My kid plays pc atm while i play ps3. Dont have an xbox because it broke 3 times ><

I actually was planning on starting over from scratch AGAIN. So I guess I'm the test subject? Lol

I may be wrong but isn't re-installing merely a long-winded way of just turning the PS3 off and on again? It cures the lag but only temporarily like clearing a cache?

Im at 15 mb. I can quit to main menu, reload and the lag will be gone, as long as i dont zone or fast travel.

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I am so fed up of people going on and on and on about save files, and any relevance of save file size to the framerate... it is so utterly depressing.

Is it just me that has noticed this bizzare cycle of people spouting unfounded pseudo-fact on this forum.
Then the web media (cvg, psm, and other sites) are reading this rubbish on this forum, then publishing it on their pages
and then SHOCK HORROR people on the forum quoting these sites as fact! OMFG!

"my mate dave, right, had it, and he had a friend who's dad once programmed a microwave, right, and he said it was a save file size problem, right"

Monty Pythons Life of Brian and his mad followers springs to mind.

I 'fast travelled' several times during the 6 hour session and found no decrease in framerate after each successive journey. Sure, there were pockets of lag now and then. Every game on the planet has those. But nothing untoward or unplayable.

Thank you to our test subjects :)

Unless Bethesda actually gives us a heads up, we probably won't know until the end of the week whether starting a new game post-patch is what needs to be done.

I have a feeling anyone starting over or buying Skyrim from new today and playing it fully updated will not experience the gamebreaking lag of legend.

My session was very enjoyable and relatively smooth but compared to some other players who have uncovered more map and completed a higher percentage of the game, then for them the patch remedy may be slow in returning their data to a smoother playing experience.

I would (and will eventually) start over but I just got Dragon Armor!! :)

Wow, no need to get an ulcer over this. I wasn't trying to jump on some bandwagon of file size. I was giving you my honest playing experience. I never saw any problems either at 7 mb. This is why I think that it might not be bad for you either. But for me, it got a lot worse once I got into double digits.
