Houses for sale? (possible spoilers)

I bought a house in whiterun, but would rather live in Marthal,Dawnstar, or Winterhold. For other people who have the game, can you buy houses in those cities? So far i havent been able to find one.

I read somewhere every major town has one. And there were three others elsewhere (not sure if these are purchasable or just earned)

Ahhh that must be it, those cities are the smallest. Definitely not major ones. Well i guess ill found out soon enough! I long to live in the blizzardy areas haha.

I've read there is one in every major town, but you have to earn the right to buy property, such as beating the dragon at whiterunt

can...can you do that?

I mean, if you kill someone, does their house go up for sale? or is it just empty so you can squat in it?

...would the containers in NPC homes be safe...?
