[WIP] Hunters Guild

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:30 am

As I was just roaming the map and finding new areas I haven't located yet, I happened across "Hunter's Rest", an outdoor open air location like the one where the companion dog is. I was looking at the beautiful view and it occurred to me that Hunters have been basically just a "filler faction" so far for me. They serve no real purpose but to add color to the game. Or perhaps I haven't discovered them, but are there any quests with this faction?

If not, it was left wide open to mod, so I'm thinking a network of several new outdoor locations like these and some quests to work through the ranks. Maybe set up "hunts" where you hunt and kill boss level creatures to earn prowess.

These camps and outdoor shacks would just basically be places you could camp, cook and safe storage to stow your gear. Basically all the things ranger/hunter needs to live under the stars. Personally, I LOVE the outdoor accommodations like this, but most of the vanilla ones have all the containers set to steal. So they're not that practical as even a temporary dwelling. I simply MUST have places to stow my gear so this gives the loot-a-holic adventurer (raises hand) a spot in a lot of regions to set up shop for a while. The great thing is that locations outdoors like this, you have to deal with the wildlife or you can't sleep.

I like another idea where there would be random encounters scripted for some of the creatures you had to hunt. You'd just be heading to say, Riften or wherever, and nearby some Hunters would spawn and run you down to alert you to the hunt. You'd head out with them to track down the kill.

Lot's of possibilities I think.

I wish the CK was out... :sadvaultboy:

A hunters guild would be great, and a good change of pace from the other guilds.
Not too much dungeon crawl though, or so I would prefer myself. A questline set almost entirely outdoors would be nice.

Maybe get some more Hircine action going. :D

If you join the companions, you can take quest from that huntress woman whose name I can't remember, which all involve taking care of beasts..
But you need to advance the guild quest line to get more of these..

I find this to be quite doable tbh

  • Radiant Story Handles some random missions, If you take up the task doing this as a WIP beginning mod people can start doing random hunting missions while you work on storylines.
  • Bounties for different furs.
  • Hunting companions
  • Establishing new Lodges or tagging existing ones to cover more ground and game.
  • Rare beasts that require more than a simple face smaking to take out, maybe requiring poisons.
  • Seen the bear traps? lets get them useful, the work on the player you just can't pick them up.
  • items scripted to attract certain animals nearby.

yes their are alot of possibilities.

New Perk - Beast Lure

Add new cooking recipe:

1 Raw Beef (or other raw meat)
1 Garlic
1 Another smelly ingredient.

Creates "Odiferous Meat"

Place it anywhere outdoors, it's scent attracts various nearby animals.

Find a place to hide and shoot the beasts as they come to eat the food you made and put on the ground.

...

Possibly combine the meat with a bear trap (if we could pick them up) to make the process even more entertaining.

The ability to craft additional hide armours based on the pelts would be a good addition to this. I want to kill a bear and wear it as a hat.

And some of the Forsworn models can help us with this.

Currently I think you are able to move the traps at least. Granted that yes, you can't put them in your inventory, but rearranging them and then rearming them should be feasible(hopefully :D).

Just had a thought, maybe for those with a Hunter Mage -ish class, allow the traps to be combined with the various runes. Maybe used to take down bigger beasts, and then they could be recharged with soul stones.

This is what we really need. I want to wear my throphies.
Different hide/fur armors and maybe even different bone and scale armors? (chaurus scale armor would be nice)
Wolf fur armor <<<< Ice bear fur armor and so on. Same models, but different colors and values.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everybody! I love most of the ideas so far. If anyone is a good texture artist and can re-texture some of the suggested armors that would be awesome. I svck as an atrist and could only do a pitiful hack job on them, lol.

I've just discovered what I believe would be an awesome way to start the Hunters Guild questline. I've just been exploring, basically just wandering through the map finding new locations and I happened across Froki Whitted-Blade and his little side quest. I can't think of a more perfect way to have an initiation for the player to prove they have what it takes to join the inner circle of the guild. From there player could be tasked with more dangerous assignments against increasingly more worthy opponents.

Depending on how everything in the new CK works, I was thinking I could start everything with a quest enabled so if player has completed Froki's quest when they load the mod and start the game they would get an update (possibly a visit from Kynareth herself?) to simply find the current Guildmaster (or someone like that) to begin the actual new questline. If they happened to find this person before doing Froki's quest they would be instructed that to earn their trust and respect they had to do the trials. I could set conditions for dialog based on completing the 3 stages of the trials and player would have to have the quest completed as well as have the amulet in their possession to get the next dialog from the Guildmaster. (I'd have to script this out, but that could be the basics.)

Also, any good & creative ideas you have for objectives and quest stages would be awesome! What do you think?

Hey, I just looked this up doing some research on Kynareth.

Kynareth is known as Kyne to the Nords as the strongest of the Sky spirits and the widow of Shor, the Nordic aspect of Lorkhan.

also

Kynareth controls the famed Lord's Mail, also known as the Armor of Morihaus and the Gift of Kynareth. The Lord's Mail is known to have the power to regenerate the wearer's health, cure poisons, and grant resistance to magic. Many heroes have possessed the Gift over the years, including the Eternal Champion, the Hero of Daggerfall, and the Nerevarine.

For a final epic/boss level battle I wonder if some angle on Shor/Lorkhan could be worked in to the story? Any knowledgeable lore scholars out there? Also, what do you think of that armor as a reward? (I kike it myself!)

A fully fledged hunters guild would be a fantastic addition to the game. I can create assets for this project if required. As well as sound and dialogue.

There was a mod for fallout new vegas That let you pick up bear traps and drop them anywhere you wanted. It was so satisfying watching those wolves run at you full force hit the trap and die instantly and realistically. Here it is http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34977Y

It's true that an outdoor quest-line would be quite a change, a nice one ! :)

I was also thinking that in addition to classic hunting mission and the quest-line you are thinking of, it could be nice to introduce an opposite faction to work on a "feud".

For example, Hunters are clearly people who hunt, and they are not always geared and skilled to fight bandits, so missions about securing camps (no indoor location) or maybe a fort (negotiated with Imperials/Stormcloaks depending on the progression of the player).
Basically, create a network of camps all over Skyrim for hunters, to have a headquarter (I did not visit the place you are talking about in OP). Introduce a specific bandit clan to the game to emphasize and have the possibility to expand its story to make something a bit more developed than: "Bandits are mean to us, go kill 'em !". The only drawback is the fact that its a little a copycat of the feud between Imperials and Stormcloaks.

These are only a few ideas, but I hope you might use some of these. Of course, concerning the story of Kynareth, even if I don't know much about what you are talking about (except the artifact), Hunters are also represented by the Daedra Hircine. Some kind of cleavage inside the faction could make an interesting side story, with a good/bad ending for pro/con Hircine depending on the player's choices and success to accomplish something about this. If you are interested, I might think a little more about it and produce a 4-5 quest long story-line.

Can't wait to get my hands on the CK too. ;)

There is actually a hunter in game that gives u a hunter quest...

Frokis Shack, which is up in the hills south of the Ruins of Bthalft. Froki is a Nord Hunter and he sends you on a quest to hunt 3 guardian beasts. (Skeever, Wolf and Mudcrab).

I think for this mod to really work there needs to be a creature mod that adds a lot more prey and predators. A creature mod and hunters guild should go hand and hand
because people are going to download creature mods and if the hunters guild mod has quest then it might not include other creatures from other mods.

And mages might be able to craft amulets and stuff out of animal bones and ingredients (magical accessories).

I would download this in a heartbeat, I am always interested in more content, and I love just going through the wilderness and taking out animals with my Bow+Arrows. (I also wish that 'prey' animals would sometimes try and fight you off. Big ass Elk? Runs away when shot. Fox with sharp teeth? Runs. Goat with horns? Runs.) On that note, I'm a four legged murder and need a reason for my slayings :D

I very much like the idea of this mod, and would make it one of my essentials.

Also, adding to what Guiguizmo.91 said, maybe the opposing faction could be a faction of poachers. They would differ from the hunters by killing indiscriminately, threatening to drive many species
to extinction, giving the hunters guild a pragmatic reason in opposing them. You could also add Kynareth here, where you act as her champion in stopping them.

As an avid hunter irl, I can tell you that fox and elk definitely run when you shoot at them. In fact, you don't even have to shoot at them. Most animals just run by default. Even coyote run when you get too close. Bear aren't aggressive either, unless you get too close to the den or they've got cubs nearby.
