install (unable to change to dagger)

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 1:31 pm

Then go to the bottom where it says "# Lines in this section will be run at startup." and add the following lines:
MOUNT C GAMES
C:
CD DAGGER
FALL.EXE Z.CFG
Save the config file as Daggerfall.conf and you're done with that.

after following the install directions (about a day and a 12pack later)
i try to start up the game from dos and get

C:\>cd dagger
Unable to change to: dagger.

C:\>fall.exe
Illegal command: Fall.exe.

C:\>Z.cfg
Illegal command: Z.cfg.

also while trying to start from
the dosin dagger folder i get an error regarding Dagger.pif
invalid startup directory, please check your pif file.

where have i fallen off the path to gamerdon?

Don't use DOS. Use DOSBox and make sure you use the MOUNT command correctly and installed Daggerfall into the right place.

of coarse i meant dosbox
the current path for the game is in DOSBox\Games\Dagger

im fairly certain it was in stalled correctly but i will give it another go :/

ok so i have checked and corrected some paths

but now i have got

C:\Dagger>fall.exe Z.cfg
ERR: map file not specified there are configuration error(s)

Do exactly what it says in Freddo's walkthrough. That's how I got mine to work :)

Why don't you just mount directly to C:\dagger and then just type dag.bat? Maybe you are using a different method than I am.

Freddo almost killed me once when I posted how I mount daggerfall but here I go again:

mount c c:/
c:
cd/dagger
fall z.cfg

still works fine

edit: I already hear freddo shouting HALT HALT!

I installed daggerfall in C:\Dagger

and enter fall z.cfg instead of
fall.exe z.cfg

unless he's created and added a fall.bat file, entering fall has the same effect as entering fall.exe

I'd suggest moving the dagger folder so you don't need to mount the root partition under DOSBox. If they suggest you don't, I wouldn't. I've done it, sure, but if there's a risk in doing so, why bother when it's easy enough not to?

fall.exe does not work for me unless I am using an OS with Dos. I use the dag.bat method. Whatever works, I guess.

Howdy! I'm glad I found you guys - I've been DYING to play Daggerfall for the last 8 years (ever since my old comp bit the dust)

I'm having trouble with Freddo's instructions. I've followed them exactly so far, and I can get partway into the install from the game. When I tell it to install as huge in c:\Dagger (the default, as Freddo recommends), I get the error that there is not enough space on the disk for that size install. When I first mounted the c:\ I made sure to type -freesize 500. After I had the problem, I went back to my c:\ and double checked my free space, and I have 500 (and change) bytes free, which should be ample.

I'm running DOSBox 0.72, I've placed the folder "Games" in the dosbox file. Mounted c:\ as games, etc - all the same as Freddo said. And I'm trying to install to the default c:\Dagger

I've tried this a couple times, thinking I might have just had a typo. Nope. All good there.

I could scrounge out my MS-DOS 6.2 manual and copy over everything myself, but I don't want to diverge from Freddo's instructions that much. Plus, I know that DOSBox and 6.2 aren't *exactly* the same, and I'm waaaay more comfortable with 6.2 than I am with DOSBox. So I want to stick close to the guy who knows what he's doing.

Can anyone please help? Thank you! I'll wash your dishes if you can help me get this to work!

Try a higher freesize then. 1000 or something.

@nodnol
I would actually recommend using the Daggerfall XP Installer (also works for Vista, google it), because you won't be bothered with the commands (for installing that is), though you must edit your Z.CFG file so that it points to the correct path.
