Just a few questions on destruction

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 1:24 am

So after I accidentally deleted my summoner warrior build I decided to do an archer Mage build. I'm actually doing better than I expected. I'm at level 22. I thought that since I was used to a lot of heavy armor the lack thereof would be tough but I've adapted well. Here are my questions:
- recently I found the incinerate tome just lying somewhere so of course I was ecstatic. I decided to unload it on a giant only to find out that it took out a very minuscule amount of health. I had to switch to fireball to kill it because incinerate simply has to high of a magicka cost. Now what gives. It says it does 75 damage and I have the 50% damage increase for fire damage. Also if fireball didn't do AOE damage I'd probably just stick to firebolt because it says it does 43 or something where as fireball does 50. So someone explain this destruction tree to me. Firebolt is cheap and does decent damage, fireball does AOE damage and slightly more overall damage, and incinerate is supposed to do a ton of damage but costs a ton of magicka. Now I only have the half cost for adept destruction so I think that why incinerate is expensive.

- what magic type (fire, ice lightning) do you guys use and why? I chose fire because fire magic does more damage over time and who doesn't want to do more overall damage, especially as a Mage. I have the flame perks maxed and I'm working on ice. and what is your spell of choice?

- do you think Beth will ever give us magic regeneration during fights? I usually don't need it since I've put almost every perk into magic at level up but when I have like 7 enemies at once or a really hard one and I run out of magic, taking out the bow doesn't help that much lol.

If I think of more questions I'll post them here, thanks guys.

My spell of choice is lightning. It's easier to take on other mages. After that I chose fire. I like chain lightning and fireball the best because it does good damage and can hurt multiple foes at the same time. It doesn't cost to much magicka as well.

Also, you do have magic regeneration during fights.

I thought regen only occurred outside of fights. My magic regents a lot quicker when I'm not fighting. I have the arch mages robes and several other items that increase regen but they don't seem to effect it much at all

There are many threads I've seen going over how to make Destruction viable in this game. I choose a different path as a mage / archer also. I added Conjuration as my magic and concentrated on archery as my other skill. This allows me to conjure up something to keep the foe interested while I stand back and pot shot from distance. Conjuration is also very valuable when you find you need to enter a room full of foes. I send in a conjured to fight taking out a few while I stand outside the fray or pot shot if that's possible.

I can send in as many as it takes. I prefer that to using Destruction where you need to enter, hit what you can but then flee / regen magic and repeat.

I do minor in conjuration but I'm having trouble leveling it because sending out some atronachs while casting spells puts a huge damper on magicka even though I have almost 400. Thanks though, I'll try it.

Incinerate is an expert level spell so you'll first need the 50% reduction or it costs too much magicka to make it useful. Next it helps to have a lot of gear focused on reducing Magicka use with destruction magic. My mage has Masters Robes of Destruction, Peerless Circlet of Destruction, Peerless Ring of Destruction, and a Necklace of Destruction and my incenerates only cost 12 magicka. I can double cast them with no problems running out of magicka. So the gear makes a huge difference. Incenerate is very powerful and is one of my go to spells but without some major magicka use reduction it's just not practical. I used the standard fire bolts for a long time until I had the right gear.

My second favorite spell is chain lightning because it drains mana from other magic users, targets easily, has very long range, has no travel time, and hits multiple enemies.

I use Conjuration to back me up against multiple enemies. Once you have a Dremora Lord you wont have a care in the world.

Also, if you're going to take a companion along it's best to take another mage. A melee tank seems like the obvious choice but they get in the way and can be killed by your spells severely limiting your choices and movement in a fight. Another caster stays back out of the way.
