I just spent 2 hours decorating my house

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:22 am

I've been playing TES games since Morrowind, and had Oblivion for all platforms at one time or another. I got Skyrim on opening day, and I'm now 49 odd hours into the game (with only 3 main quests done). Today I was arranging books on my bookshelves in my home in Whiterun, when I remembered that by holding down the A (XBox) button I could move objects! Well nearly 2 hours later, I have completely rearranged my house, and now have cool stuff I collected on my shelves. Mammoth tusks, Dwemor parts, potion recipes lying about. Thanks Beth for making the greatest game of all time!
Also, anyone else nerd out as hard as me with their house?

LOL nice. I am also only a few main quests in, spending lots of time in dungeons and doing side quests, but nowhere nearly as devoted as you to my house. It's a mess!

Well, I wanted to. Tried to. But half the time when I walk in the door everything bounces around and falls off from where I've put it, so I have since given up. I don't know if this is a PC only bug or not, but good luck!

have you reentered your home? I've heard that everything might start bouncing around or fall through the floor.

The WinterHold house is the best, imo. More merchants too and close to Stormcloak.

I spent a couple of days doing this in Oblivion, but there's no floating paint brushes in Skyrim to balance my weapons on.

Also somehow the grabbing/moving of items seems to work a bit worse than Oblivion. :(

This is why i have yet to pimp my home.

I spent hours upon hours pimping up my homes in fallout 3/ NV and Oblivion, its very addictive :P but until my house stops looking like a bombsite after i re-enter i wont be doing anything to it... which isnt easy as i love pimping out my homes :(

haven't bothered with this myself
knocked over a plate with 2 rabbit legs on it and spent half an hour trying to get them back into place (well maybe not half an hour but way longer than I should)
thing kept bouncing around whenever i tried to place the rabbit legs on it
also put 2 troll skulls next to the door outside but one of them got stolen :o

Now use a blizzard scroll in there and see what happens.

How do you actually pick up items and rearrange them again on PC?

I tired trying the 'stand so far from a table and drop item' method.

Literally last night I spent at least an hour or so putting everything in the correct storage places. Clothes in one place, weapons in another ... I even put a Flute, a Drum, and Lute all next to eachother in this really cool looking display ... but when I came back to my house - IT WAS ALL ON THE FLOOR :banghead:

Plus it was really difficult to move everything? Did you find it easy? I feel like they should use LB or L1 for rotating the item you're holding.

Just bought the house before work this morning. I couldn't afford to furnish it completely, so I'll likely just stow everything I don't need with me in the trunk in the bedroom until I can, but then everything gets arranged.

Just wait until you go back into your home. You won't feel that way then. Not to mention the grabbing mechanic is terrible, unlike Oblivion's where you could precisely choose where you're picking the object up. Sadly everyone is having this problem, consoles too. It makes me not want to go in my home, but I still love it. I'm gonna keep attempting to put stuff down and hopefully some day it will stay. lol

I have decorated as well but unfortunately things keep bouncing around. I may hold off until a fix is made. Plus the controls are worse than Oblivion and Fallout. In those games you could grab and edge and move it from there now it just grabs the whole thing from the middle it seems. Make re-ranging difficult.

I hope the the next game they change this so you can actually manipulate the object with other key. I would like to see Pick up with 'A' the rotate horizontal with 'X' and rotate vertical with 'Y'.

And now we wait for NPCs to storm your house and give you back your items.

It is on Xbox as well, I had all my cool stuff on the shelves, I cam back into the house to find it all laying on the floor across the room. Also my save is cursed by the weapon rack glitch that doesn't allow to to put weapons in the racks.

Amazing that we all (well almost all) thought that Oblivions "placing items" was bad, in this game it doesn't even work or takes a ridiculous amount of time!

I seriously wonder if Beth actually listens or learns from the past?

me too - those bleeping rabbit legs are driving me crazy!! raw food on the floor? /shudder

and i still can't get most things arranged correctly, like setting pots on their bases.... in the bedroom, so far the endtables & round table haven't bounced anything off yet, but everything on the dresser falls off every time.. :P i want the CS so i can place odds 'n ends permanently! :D

plus i need a lot more bookshelves, though the "activate" shelf option will save me TONS of time! (i only recently realized how ocd i was being in morrowind when i found myself arranging my books alphabetically in my THIRD house/collection.....)

edit: nvm about the endtables.. things still fall off those too... /pout

Stuff seems to stay after the initial drop-place-reenter to a mess. just replace the stuff and it stays. Hopefully modders can use the place book code to let you place any item on shelves. Also i thought i read somewhere that mannequins would be in the game? I havent seen any nor any for sale yet.

replace using Grab (E for me on pc) or just dropping from inventory? 'cuz plain dropping bounces things all over the place! :D and i've tried using Grab several times on the same item and they've fallen several times.. i'm certain i didn't get them in the ezact same spots though... so any help/tips would be hugely appreciated!

and thanks for the mannequin info!
