Keybinding Issues #2 (Hotkeys, Favorites, NumPad, Drop Item,

I've found a work around for keybinding to mouse buttons. If you use a Logitech mouse along with the Setpoint software, you can create a Skyrim specific profile and remap the buttons so they agree with the default keys in Skyrim, works perfect!

Not sure why you guys didn't see these problems during testing...I mean, every single PC title these days ALWAYS has these remapping bugs at release. 1995 PC games didn't have these problems, no idea what you do to the code that screws up the most basic system functions in this way. For gods sake hire some left handed testers who remap keys...PLEASE!

Problems I have noticed that make it difficult to play:

- In most cases, the button to close a menu is never the same as to open it (i.e. I press MB5 to open favourites, but have to press END* to close it). REALLY FRUSTRATING. *END is my remapped Character menu key.

- Having to press TAB to close stuff is so frustrating...its on the other side of the keyboard as all my keys are mapped around the arrow keys. Please make every menu closable using the key that is used to open it, remapped or not. This would be so much easier, and smarter.

- remapped movement keys don't work on the map, as I still have to use the WASD to move around even though movement is mapped to my arrow keys.

- Why can't I map a shield to my other hand? Did you only do one set of animations for shield wielding? Please allow me to wield a shield on EITHER arm.

- Not sure why you can't have a 'cast current spell' key binding. Having to click on a menu every time I want to change between a spell and a weapon is VERY TEDIOUS. I am pretty sure this feature was in Oblivion, so what happened to it in Skyrim?

- Favourites key binding is forgotten after reloading the game. I map my favourites to MB5, but still have to press F to link an item to my favourites menu.

- LOCK PICKING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always remap my movement to the arrow keys, and lock picking still uses the WASD keys!!!! You can imagine how bloody annoying this is, especially as I play as a stealthy thief, a LEFT HANDED stealthy thief. This bug is so annoying it very much warrants the HIGHER CASE TYPING.

- Basically, PLEASE just sit down with one of your testers, get him to remap ALL of his keys, then get him to play for an hour...that lucky tester will win a +20 bug count in that hour and probably win a prize for discovering the most neglected testing field in modern PC gaming.

Stop being left-hand fascists. I am so sick of us 'minority' players getting shafted because you cannot test simple key remapping in a PC game, which, let's be honest, really is the easiest thing to test and fix right?

Skyrim is highly enjoyable thus far, but these bugs are really jading my experience. Please fix these issues and learn from them.

Thanks for your time.

P.s. how come I didn't get a second chance to change my race? I didn't really bother me but this was a great feature in Oblivion, where you could change your mind before setting off into the world.

P.p.s. I cannot find a key that allows me to reset an arrow once it is primed...I have to shoot it ino the ground and pick it up again, which feels qquite sloppy. Is there a key that I am missing that allows this?

Tanky, I feel your pain man.
I can't steal books because of the key mapping bug. As an aside to this HUGE issue - the keys (that aren't mapped correctly) change depending on what menu you are in. It's like you have to figure out what key does what in each and every different menu in the game! I'm not having any performance issues (haven't had the game crash once) but this keymapping bug is a total nightmare.

A quick point that may help a little. Sometimes you can click on the words or button image in the lower left that say R for this or Tab for that. Again, I say *sometimes* because not even that holds true for all menu's.

I left the R key bound as default, for Ready, re-bound everything else in the interface in Skyrim (used the controlmap.txt hack higher in the thread to "unlock" the numpad), and then used AHK *only* for the R key (telling it to make the backspace key send an 'R').

It sort of works but I'm getting crashes that may or may not be related to these changes.

Thanks... I used the controlmap.txt and it is now working better than autohotkey because I can map to the num pad and still use the R button to drop items, etc...

What a mess... thanks to everyone that has been working on fixes and giving tips and advice. Hopefully Bethesda can straighten this fiasco out. I wish I didn't like these games so much.

It will work but it is annoying at best and prevents you from doing some things you might want to do if you are left handed or using an N52 gamepad (like use buttons on the gamepad for right and left hands instead of mouse1 and mouse2).

Really, its hard to imagine they did any testing here :( Put a couple of hardcoe old-school WASD-key loving 3d gamers, a couple left-handed people, and a couple people used to using gaming keyboards like the N52 in a room with the game and tell them to set it up, and they surely would have ran into these serious bugs.

PC-gamers are showing record levels of support for you on Steam, Bethesda, you really need to let us know you appreciate it and not try to force us to plug in an X-box controller (or go buy an X-box?)

About the testing - exactly. Here's another issue that should be have been caught if they had a good cross-section of players testing the PC interface.

I'm one of those people who likes to invert Y.

Well, guess what... in conversation, you can move your mouse to the edges of the screen and when you do so, the camera will move.

Well, for up / down, they didn't tie that behavior to the invert Y. When you have invert Y selected, this also needs to be inverted.

I see you guys are talking about "R" key issues, which is also used to drop items into a container. I have tried using the key that I have re-mapped to (Im using the auto-hotkey work-around) but it will not drop items. I actually haven't been able to find any button at all that will drop the items, so I can't put anything in chests in my house, etc...

Any fix for this?

What is the key you use to unsheath or stow away your weapon? Try that one.

For me that "ready weapon" key works for both dropping items and spending dragon souls. The "R" key works for other functions in the inventory menu, such as "Give," "Store Item" and "Take All."

"Drop Item" and "Spend Dragon soul," on the other hand are governed by the ready weapon key, rather than "R" .

As for left and right in the lockpick menu, I'm using A and D from the keyboard, rather than the left and right movement keys on my Numpad..

Those two points are my major gripe. It's completely inconsistent and illogical. It's different in every case, and sometimes you can do a certain thing, but other times you can't. Things shouldn't only work "sometimes."

So with all the key binding issues I decided to do a temp fix and download AutoKeyBind thingy. I see other forums showing how to fix the key binding issues, but to be honest, I really don't want to mess with my Skyrim files, actuallly I shouldn't have to mess with them in the first place if it was fixed by Bethesda..but that's neither here or there. Anywho, the AutoBind seemed to work wonders except it just stopped working mid game for some reason. I was in my inventory switching out favorites and all of a sudden the script just doesn't work anymore. Opened it up, nothing changed, restarted the script and the game, but it's like it's not even there. All my keys went back to default and numpad stopped working. Anyone know why this might be happening or how to fix it?

My script looks like this. I don't seem to have any problems. Try a reboot. create the script , save it and just double click on it everytime you need it.

Numpad8::w
Numpad5::s
Numpad4::a
Numpad6::D
Numpad7::SPACE
left::r
down::e
up::Tab

What Autokeybind program are you using? Got a link? I want to remap unsheath/drop to MB4, shout to MB5, and interact to F. But then I also need to remap POV to MB3.

I'm using: http://www.autohotkey.com/download/

Yeah, mine looks pretty much the same, cept for the smiley face. :biggrin: I'm deleted and re-created the script, still doesn't work in game now. I'm at work, but i'll check and see if it's the script that is having issues or the game that is having issues reading the script.

LOOK HERE!

Ok now that I got your attention. The first fix I reported about was kindof messy so let me explain this better for those who need a fix.

In steps

1. Download this http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640#content (You have to register but that will probably be the best thing you have ever done in you Skyrim Life. You can use the login for Skyrimnexus.com and get mods later)
2. Install the mod manager. Important is let it associate .BSA with the program (don't bother starting the program though, it will ask you to locate fallout etc. so don't bother with it)
3. Go to the Skyrim data folder usually here; "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data"
4.Open Interface.bsa with the Fallout Mod Manager
5. In the BSA viewer that pops up go to somewhere close to the bottom of the list look for the folder structure that says .../Controls/PC...
6. Select the three files "controlmap.txt," "Keyboard(map).txt," and "mouse(map).txt" under the "...Controls/PC..." structure, extract them to the desktop or wherever you like.
7. Open up all three and start editing them as explained in these files. (The keyboard and mouse map .txt contain explanations of what keys each hex represent.)
8. Save them when your finished and move the whole hierarchy to the ...\skyrim\data\ folder. It should end up looking like "...\Skyrim\Data\Interface\Controls\PC..."
9. Profit??

Ex. of a fix. To fix the "R" button issue. Make sure you have only one keyboard localization in Windows. Not several "like en, cz, IME" fx. because this easily pins down some problems. In other words make sure your localization is that of your keyboard. Ex. people with a mac keyboard would have to use "en (apple)" localization...
Now in the "controlmap.txt" map the first instance of the "R" key... usually the "Ready Weapon"
Ready Weapon                    0x13                            0xff    0x4000                          1       1       1       0x840
Check the Keyboard txt and see that 0x13 is "R," the 0x13 corresponds to the DIK (Direct Input Keyboard) or (Virtual Keyboard with a standard US QWERTY). Thus checking what key is 0x13 on your keyboard can be helpful DIK Codes Explanation
Next rename every instance you want to use the same button like this
"Name of Action"                   !0,Ready Weapon                            0xff    0xff                          1       1       0
This should fix most peoples problem.

The thing is as some probably know all menus are written in a flash actionscript called "Scaleform IO." Some keys and functions are hardmapped within this script. Like the fix for item rotation could not be done without altering the interface code. Luckily it is possible to write new or alter these files too. Writing new files means writing a new UI. While altering them means you have endless possibilities within the current UI. Open the BSA and extract the swf then run it through a Scaleform IO viewer or alter it in Scaleform IO. Now scaleform IO is surprisingly easy.. Just like flash so don't hesitate if you have time and money or the guts to... you know..

maybe make sure the script is not suspended or wasn't closed out. i use a script that i can keep running in the background at all times and it only affects skyrim. here's my esdf based autohotkeys script:

#IfWinActive ahk_class Skyrim	;key changes only in effect while Skyrim is active (so i can switch windows and type w/o having to suspend autohotkeys)e::w ;forwardd::s ;backs::a ;leftf::D ;rightMButton::e	;activate (middle mouse button)g::q ;favoritesz::Tab ;ui menuw::i ;inventoryb::P ;spell bookxbutton1::f	;switch views and add to favorites in ui (xbutton1 is 1 of the side buttons on mouse)q::j ;journalv::z ;power/shoutx::/ ;skillsTab::m ;mapa::LCtrl	;sneakLShift::LAlt	;run`::f ;switch views and add to favorites in ui (alternative key)

Don't know if this has been mentioned precisely, but as you know if you remap controls it might be impossible to pick a book while it's being read.

In my case I remapped the action button to M3 and it is impossible ; good news, when I remap the action button to a keyboard button, it works. I tried it with E (original key) and with right ctrl. It works. It seems this issue occurs only when you remap to a mouse button - at least that's the case for me.

What I do is that I temporarily remap to a keyboard button to pick or steal a book. You can try it.

Any once having this problem?

"T" for "Wait" brings up the "how long" dialog box. I can "WASD" or mouse-wheel to select time, but neither clicking on "[enter] for ok" or pressing "enter" will confirm my selection.

the same happens for sleep.

right now i'm on custom bindings, but also doesn't work with defaults. i can neither wait nor sleep, because i can't confirm.

i also can't rotate items in the inventory menu. "c" to zoom works, but no amount of clicking or dragging will rotate these objects.

thanks!

Chobiko, I believe that I have come across the permanent fix you're refering to. Problem is, I see that post and i'm like, WTF am I looking at and how the hell does it work. I'm lost if I don't have exact directions as to what I need to cut and paste...not to mention worry over accidently messing up the original files and having to reload the whole game! :ahhh:

Just two things to add to what Chobiko just said.

1) Especially for less technical peeps, the path for the edited controlmap etc. files is "\steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\Interface\Controls\PC\(your files), on the drive where steam is installed.

2) The "R key issue" as I understand it is that you can reassign Ready Weapon but not "drop item" or "get all items" because they are hardcoded and not in the control map.

So I can change ready easily enough, but it won't be the same key as "get all items," which will still be "R" unless you use autohotkey, but then you have problems with text fields in the game / console.

I will try remapping the keyboard definition in keyboard_english.txt but I think this will have the same limitation.

Update:

I remapped the backspace key in keyboard_english.txt to send the same signal to the interface as the R key (82 instead of 8 in Scaleform IO-speak).

The backspace key now works as if it were an "R" key as far as picking up all items in a container and closing it. It's no longer a backspace key to the interface, so arrows and delete would have to be used to correct text errors.

BUT it does not work as a "drop" key, while "R" still does.

(rant deleted)

It looks like the drop can be remapped along with the "Ready" action, so this kind of works now. The combo did not work with AHK.

I was messing around with trying to change some key bindings, which I think many people have discovered, doesn't work very well to begin with, and somehow I unbound my escape key, so I can't actually hit ESC to get to the main menu. Really annoying. And of course I can't rebind the key because that would require that I hit ESC to get to the key binding menu. The problem is made even worse by the fact that you can't actually bind keys from the main menu.. you have to load your game which means I can load my game, but then I can never get to the menu again because my ESC key is unbound.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Also, I'd REALLY like to see a patch where I can rebind keys and not cause problems such as the Favorites function breaking or losing the ability to drop loot.

I've noticed certain keys are not always modifiable in many games like ESC, etc., and my NumPad came with a driver software that allows you to program which key maps to which keyboard button, outside of the game. The same is true for my mouse, which has a few extra buttons.

You might want to try mapping the ESC key to a different button on your mouse or numpad (if you are using a numpad).

On the other hand, for Skyrim, if you do this with the "R" key, it will allow you to change the "Take All," "Give Item" and "Store Item" functions, but "Drop Item" and "Spend Dragon Soul" will be mapped to whatever you choose for "Ready Weapon" inside the game control settings menu, regardless of whether you have remapped the "R" key.

Whatever you have set for "Ready Weapon" will work for "Drop Item."

Interesting, thanks very much for confirming this.

I'll have to try your workaround; however, I would really prefer to continue using M3 for "Activate." What I've been doing is ordering a companion to read the book and then taking it from his inventory.

I found the merging of these threads very annoying. Each issue was being updated with additional input, and without confirmed developer presence/knowledge of this thread, merging them into a single thread simply guarantees that it will hit the post limit more quickly. We need these issues to remain front and center for Bethesda to address.

Guys... if you are using the modified controlmap.txt, what is the button to mark and unmark "favorites"? "F" does not work.
