Killing my drivers

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:28 pm

Skyrim has killed my display drivers three times at the time of writing (the screen goes black and my monitor stops receiving a signal). All three times have been within a recent entry into the main world (exiting Bleakfalls Barrows, exiting the Riverrun tavern, exiting the Honeymead place).

I have tried lowering the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, disabling V-Sync, disabling the steam overlay, and disabling all autosaves (I was desperate). I'm about to try again after turning my draw distance down low, but my hopes are slim. I have also checked AMD's site for new drivers but I am up-to-date.

Specs:
i5-2400 @ 3.10GHz
AMD 6870
8GB RAM

I've got this too. It's unplayable, I think it's ATI specific.

I'm running an ATI card also (6790), and was also having a load of problems. Try rolling your drivers back to 11.9. That's been working for a lot of people, myself included.

I'll try this, do you happen to know where I can get the 11.9 version?
When, I go to the amd website and go to previous drivers the first one on the list is 11.8

Go into Control Panel -> System and Security -> Device manager

Go to your display adapter and hit 'Roll Back Drivers'

Each time you do this, re-load catalyst and check the driver version in it.

I have a 6870 and using catalyst 11.9 but I never experienced said driver crashing, have you tried looking at the card's temperature while playing? I only ever experienced VPU recovers(drivers restarting) when overclocking my card or the temperature/voltage is too high/low for the clocks I'm running.

Also what power supply do you use?

I can't remember the exact wattage but I believe it was 750W.

As for temperature, I'm using Hardware Monitor. When loading a save on the plains right outside of whiterun it jumped to 150F (66C). When loading a save inside the cave systems under Helgen it stayed at 105F (41C).
When I'm playing Battlefield 3 on high I run around the same temperatures with it peaking at 163F.

Also, I rolled back to 11.9 and it seemed to be working (I was playing through the tutorial as a test and got to the middle of the cave area before peacefully quitting to tweak settings) but eventually ended up crashing later.

I'm currently playing in windowed mode to see if it happens as well.
I've been playing for a good bit now and it seems to be working fine, of course it's not how we all want to play the game but atleast it's something until they fix it.

This doesn't mean anything though it might still crash but as of now it seems to be working

I've been having this issue specifically when trying to exit the World Map. Happens every time, and hasn't happened while doing anything else.

Radeon HD5770 here.

Same:

ATI Radeon HD 6850, Win7 64bit.

I found that running the game in Compatability Mode for Vista Service Pack 2 fixed my driver crashes in the skills menu and quest/pause menu. ( I can finally level up, god damnit. :P) I still get it while loading, and sometimes randomly around the world too, though.

How are you running a steam game in compatibility mode? I had it running for 2 hours with the 11.9 drivers, and thought I fixed it; but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Go to the Skyrim directory in your Steam folder, right-click TESV and change the compatibility. This sorta worked for me. Still crashed but took longer than >5minutes.

Same problem Spent 10 hours trying all the fixes on the net and no luck. using HD 5770 have submitted help from Tech support at ATI awaiting a reply. Have seen on this forum Cata 11.11 is coming out next week with Skyrim fixes hopefully this will clear it up. Enough people are having this problem for it to be looked at!

I just went through the file directory to the exe and changed stuff like normal... All Steam does is run the launcher, which in turn runs that exe instead of you clicking on it.

I'm getting this too. I am able to replicate it as my save is at Moss Mother Cavern. Every time I engage the first Spriggan, the game freezes. Occasionally it recovers, but most often in crashes and a hard reset is necessary.

Compatibility mode didn't help either
11.9 didn't help
Clean install of windows didn't help
Latest audio drivers didn't help
I also disconnected my other 4 hard drives suspecting there was something up with my power supply, but seeing so many others with the same problem I doubt it's my hardware.

i7 920
HD 6870
6 GB DDR3
WIn7 Ultimate

This is such a bummer, I took the day off and have been troubleshooting for 10 hours.

Install the http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php. I still crashed while using it, but it seemed to take longer. And even if it doesn't work, performance will still improve.

I'm having this problem. If I could play the game for longer than 15-20mins, I could look past the shotty performance, textures, mouse issues and any other bugs.

I've tried:
Different drivers (11.10, 11.9)
Game reinstall (always using 1.1 patch)
Changing audio settings
4GB Patcher
Various settings in Catalyst and In-game
Compatibility mode

My hardware:
i5-2400
AMD 6950 1GB
4GB RAM
Realtek HD audio chipset
Win 7 SP1 x64

Aside from the mouse issues, game runs like a champ when it doesn't crash.
My monitor looses video signal, so I have to hard reset to fix the computer.
Hopefully see a client patch on Monday or sooner.
