Can I quit back to the main menu and load when LAG kicks in, or do I have to shut off PS3 and restart?

Close the game (go to the XMB) and open it again. Or just reboot the PS3. Reloading a save doesn't fix the problem, and causes others like settings and vendor's money not at the point where you saved.
