Need Help with choosing a follower!

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:24 am

Hey! I've been playing Skyrim for over 300 hours now but I'm lacking something...a companion. I play a dark elf destruction mage with 100 destruction and I don't know which follower would be best suited for my spec. Any suggestions would be great and if so where to find the followers would be even more appreciated.

I never use a follower and they can be a complete PITA so make a manual save before you choose one so you can easily revert should things go wrong.

While it may at first make sense to take a tank warrior to complement a mage, friendly fire seems to be the bane of followers and their AI. I would suggest another destruction mage, and who better than a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Aranea_Ienith (who just happens to use summons as well)?

If you are a Dunmer, you can hire Jenassa too. I also play a Dunmer and I only use another Dunmer as companions.
Aranea Ienith is a good option.
But different. Jenassa is a fighter, Aranea is a mage type.

You can set Athis, a dunmer companion if you done that quest too. Also a fighter.

Thanks heaps for the replies. Yes i agree friendly fire will be a serious problem with the spells like lightning storm, specially with a tank follower. I think Aranea the mage would be a good choice, does she do summons aswell? if so what summons?

I remember she summoning a frost atronach.
Also if you hire Athis or Jenassa, you can remove their melee weapon, and equip them just with bow and arrows. But well.. the atronach seems cooler :P
I personally use a mod that allows me to have multiple followers, so I set up a camp and I put all my followers there with a "stand by" order

Hire Janessa and give her a couple of really powerful staffs. Every time you encounter a wolf it'll be like nuclear war broke out.

So obviously with that much playing time your skills are high I am assuming, I have a High Elf with a conjuration skill of 100 with the perk "Twin Souls", after this I have conjured a "Master Necromancer", and a "Master Conjurer" using the "Dead Thrall" spell, I have not died since, and neither have they! Although I have stopped levelling up as fast, so to prevent them from stealing my XP, I kill them in my safe-house for safe keeping.

Aranea is nice. I don't have her as a follower, but I gave her spell list to my other follower, Shavari, so they are basically the same. She casts some defensive spell on herself, conjures flame or frost atronach and blasts hell out of things with Lightning, Ice Spikes and occasional Ice Storm i think.

I like her style! :)

If you can "stomach" her quest, and dont mind a Breton, Eola is an awesome companion and fellow mage.

I would go with Brelyna Maryon. I also play a Dark Elf mage and she's a great help. She's dark elf too, and plays more defensively, but will also use destruction. I gave her my staff of magnus and she totally abuses it. She will summon atronachs which is very useful if you're playing a destruction mage. Also if you use conjuration too you can have three atronachs at the same time plus a follower which is a tremendous help. She's nice to have around, too, and isn't annoying like some followers. If you play a sneaky mage, she's also has a high sneak skill
EDIT: you can find her at the college of Winterhold

If you'd like to watch the game rather than play, you could try out Marcurio who can be found at the inn in Riften. A spectacular mage that makes for a great companion, just be aware that much of the challenge in the game can be over at that point as he's just too good, spamming destruction spells all over the place with near-pefect accuracy.

Indeed, I love him. But, he just is that damn good. Another follower I like to use is Cosnach, you can find him in Markarth. I just adore his drunken banter. I usually stick to Cicero or Cosnach, depending on my mood. Derkeethus is also good, and is the only Argonian follower in the whole game.

Take on an apprentice! You need to pass down your knowledge before you die. :)

Well, I keep going back to Aela of the companions. She levels to 50, and I picked her up after that so we're good. She sneaks, uses a bow, but doesn't take stolen goods. I had no need of anyone else. I tried a few, but really, I have gotten used to Aela.... Weird, its only a game, but I feel we are a functioning pair. (My character is mostly sneak/archer so we do well together)
