I'm not trying to be racist but....

Post » Sat Jul 07, 2012 3:19 am

The Redguards are supposed to be the African type race in the game yet the only one voiced by a black person is Nazir (Three Dog's voice actor) All the others have the same voice actors as the Bretons, Nords, and Imperials and even some elves. It just doesn't fit. I know they recycle voice actors. Its just a part of the Elder Scrolls series but I at least wish the ones they do recycle fit the characters like in Oblivion and Morrowind when the Redguards were the black guys not the extremely tanned white guys. Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad or complaining just wondering.

They are actually more arab then african, but even still, nothing ever defined them as being "black" other then skin color, not voice.

Have you heard blacks from places such as England?

They sound nothing like the sterotype you have in your mind of what they should sound like.

The American language and style the use is not universal.

In previous games I do believe that the voice actors were black

And this is very true. I'm not super ecstatic about the Redguard voice in Skyrim, but hey, at least the Dunmer aren't as bad as they were in Oblivion. Progress!

So you're saying that the Redguard race can't be considered "black" because they don't have the voice of a stereotypical "black" voice actor? What about Tiger Woods?

I view Redguards as Arabic, but interesting observation.

You know, I've been thinking...in previous games all we really had to go by was skin, voice, and the fact that Redguards were one of the athletic and combat proficient races, but now in Skyrim the A'lkir have their head wraps so everyone is saying "Arabic." Maybe Beth realized that there were some unintentional stereotypes going on, so they made a better effort to give Redguards an actual culture. Just a thought.

I've often wondered why they don't get some of the voice actors to do different types of voices. Perhaps they do and I just don't know it. I'm by no means a professional voice actor but I feel pretty confident that I could come up with about 20 different voices that sound like entirely different people. I'm sure a voice actor could do the same thing. While there are many more voices than there were in Oblivion it is still a bit annoying that Balgruuf, Ralof and about 10,000 other important Nords have the same voice.

I don't view them as arabic much, I sort of view them more like their own little thing. It's too complicated to explain.

Y'know the fact that you pointed out the possible racism just makes you seem rascist... :I

But back on topic, I guess since they're mostly immigrants they can kind of do whatever they want? I dunno. :/

Redguards (and other TES races) are their own. I'd be surprised to see them speaking in a very recognizable real-world accent. I guess the point in having imaginary races is that they're original?

The A'lkir have head wraps because they are desert people. It is less of a culture thing and more of a practical thing that became a culture thing. A lot of Redguards don't wear the head wraps, but it seems to be implied that those who do are from the A'lkir desert. And aside from Nazir (correct me if wrong) the only other Redguards wearing the turbans are the A'lkir warriors encountered near Whiterun.

I felt their voices fit fine, they're humans that along with far as we know have no distinct accent so there is no reason for them to change anything. I actually hate when I see a black person in a game that just has generic black guy voice A.

Well the voice actor for Isran (Fort Dawnguard) is black, and Isran is a Redguard so it fits. At least one :P

I know, right? They did it in Morrowind and Oblivion, I don't see why they didn't do it in Skyrim.

Professional Komodo Dragons were not available for the feral dragons, sadly. Shame, too. I heard those creatures made amazing voice actors.

They do have a habit of turning somber holidays into drunken holidays for some reason... The redguards, that is.

if anything, the Redguards take after the moorish Islamic arabs that once dominated north africa... they are most likely a mix of arabian, nubian deccent

Actually every province of Tamriel is based on real life countries.

High Rock: a mix of the Celtic and Saxon countries.

Skyrim: a mix of the Scandinavian and Celtic countries.

Morrowind: ???

Hammerfell: Arabian countries.

Cyrodiil: a mix of the Saxon and Mediterranean countries.

Summerset: ???

Valenwood: Endor?

Elsweyr: a mix of Hammerfell and maybe of the Amazon rainforest.

Blackmarsh: Amazon rainforest.
