Oblivion won't start even with mods disabled.

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 10:17 am

I can usually muddle my way through CTDs given enough time and a firm desk to bash my head against, but this one has me stumped. Launching Oblivion with mods enabled results in an immediate crash, not even getting me past the Bethesda logo, and launching it without mods doesn't turn out much better. This is not a new game; I'm 17 levels and far too many hours into this character, and in spite of my towering mod list everything seemed to be playing nice with everything else until now.

Here's my load order:

The merged mods are all clothing and weapons I smooshed together to try and save ESP space. They're probably sitting in the wrong place since BOSS can't recognize them, but haven't done my other games any harm.

Event Viewer's application error report, in case it helps at all:

Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x005920f3, process id 0x1198, application start time 0x01cbc83399162620.

Enabling Wrye Bash's autoghost feature was the last thing I did before the game stopped working. Disabling it didn't fix the problem and I doubt it caused such an epic game-break anyway--someone else would have noticed by now!

For other details that may or may not be relevant, I've just switched over to Wrye Bash 291. Prior to that I had 286. I'm also running OBSE v0019b with the following DLLs: ConScribe, Universal Silent Voice, NIFScript, Fast Exit, Pluggy, Oblivion Stutter Remover, and weOCPS.

Solutions I've tried already:
- Re-BOSSing my load order. It fixed nothing.
- Rebuilding my bashed patch. It fixed nothing.
- Rebuilding Oblivion.ini. It fixed nothing.
- Disabling all mods. It fixed nothing.
- Following http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=340 to reset my game to vanilla without reinstalling. After that I could get to the main menu, but attempting to start a new game resulted in more CTDs. It did give me a different application error report: Faulting application Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, faulting module Oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, time stamp 0x462392c7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00075ec5, process id 0x1110, application start time 0x01cbc8a1d4231570.
- Rebuilding Oblivion.ini again, just in case. It fixed nothing.
- Uninstalling OBSE instead of just launching the vanilla game without it enabled. It fixed nothing; starting a new game still gave me crashes.
- Reinstalling OBSE on the off-chance that it would help somehow. It didn't.
- Backing up my saved games, clearing my save folder out, and starting fresh. It fixed nothing; starting a new game still gave me crashes.
- Restarting my computer at various intervals throughout the last nine steps. Nothing changed.

What's next? Reinstallation? A total hard drive reformat? Sacrificing a lamb to GameBryo under the light of a crescent moon?

How about re-installing Wrye Bash? You mentioned that was where it broke initially with the Auto Ghosting option. I'd probably remove all OBSE plugins as well.

Done and done and still no change. Tried removing Wrye Bash altogether. Crash still persists, so I guess I can rule that out as a cause.

I did update All Natural shortly before the game blew up in my face--but I read and followed all the instructions to get rid of my old version before I put the new one in, so I don't know if that could have anything to do with it...

Did you uninstall the old All Natural, rebuild your Bashed Patch without All Natural, make a clean save, and then install the newest version of All Natural?

Well you could always try reinstalling the game source files. If your using Steam it's as easy as right clicking on it under your library and clicking validate files. If not using Steam probably have to reinstall the whole thing from scratch.

I've had this happen when my Bash patch needs rebuilding. Even if it looks ok, I've found that rebuilding my patch fixes things. I've also had this happen when Oblivion is unhappy with its menus. If you installed something that alters the menus, reinstall all other mods that rely on the menus. For example, if somebody installs Oblivion XP and then decides to add a UI mod, they will have to reinstall Oblivion XP or kaboom!

Thank you all for the suggestions! Unfortunately, I did wind up having to reinstall and re-download all of my mods. I've spent the last few days scrupulously installing, BOSSing, patch-rebuilding and testing them all in handfuls to make sure that everything is okay. Progress has been tedious but promising. It all works and there's not a CTD in sight, aside from the irritating-but-acceptable crash on exit. I'm almost done!

...And now OBSE has gone and broken somehow. Game launches fine without it (albeit with a loss of dependent mod functionality, of course), but with it I get this:

clearing large-address-aware flag (flags offset = 0000011E checksum offset = 00000160)crc = 7934C86Cdll = D:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_1_2_416.dllhookBase = 001B0000loadLibraryAAddr = 768E46D6Process::InstallHook: waiting for thread = WAIT_TIMEOUTCouldn't inject dll.terminating oblivion process

Sigh.

Sounds stupid but try restarting your computer. Also if you are using Steam make sure your Steam Community in game is turned ON. Turning it Off will break the script extender functions.

Edit; By the location of your game folder I'm guessing you don't have the Steam version. In that case I'm not so sure what went wrong. You may not want to use the 20b5 script extender just yet as it's still in Beta and has a few issues. Perhaps the 19b one might work or perhaps I'm totally off base and it's something else? I also know that NO-CD patches and stuff will break the script extender functions so those should also be avoided.

I'm not really sure what your issue is cause Oblivion can turn into a nightmare to fix if you mess it up and the only surefire way to fix it is to reinstall it with a completely fresh install with no mods at all.

Yeah, I'm not using Steam. I've tried restarting a few times and disabling all my mods in case one of them was causing the problem. I guess not since it had no effect, unless one is doing something insidious even while it's disabled. (Possible?)

I'm running 19b, so maybe I'll try 20b5 or an older version just for kicks.

Edit: No dice. Tried 19a, 18, 20b5. Same DLL injection failure.

I have absolutely no idea, to be honest, but... have you tried going back to one of the official releases of Wrye Bash? Like, say, 2.90? Of course, if you do, delete the Bashed Patch, and copy over another from the Mopy directory (I know, you're probably quite familiar with all that :)).

If I think of anything else though, I'll post it.

edit: Oh, and yes, I was also using a version of OSR that caused a similar problem, not long ago. As per the post below. Worth a try?

Are you using Oblivion Stutter Remover? If so, try disabling it and see if it makes a difference. If it does, try updating to the latest WIP version of OSR.

EDIT: Reread your first post and I see you are running OSR. I was having a CTD problem loading saves with certain setups recently. Most recent WIP versions fixed it. Apparently it was some kind of heap replacement issue.

Removing OSR doesn't seem to have changed anything. I also tried removing all of my other OBSE plugins to no result, so I guess it can't be one of them.

Interesting: My computer was behaving sluggishly and defragging had no effect on it, so I ran chkdsk. Seemed relevant to my Oblivion problem as well since I was getting timeout errors. Now after rebooting I can get OBSE to run once, maybe twice if I'm quick enough to close out of Oblivion and run the loader again before it goes back to saying it can't do its DLL injection. I think there's some outside program interfering with it, as if I boot up, then delay my attempts to run the game, I get the DLL injection errors straight off when I finally do launch it. And since this is a recent problem I'm thinking that something must have quietly updated itself and broken OBSE in the process. I tried disconnecting from the internet and shutting off my firewall and antivirus. Nothing. No idea what else it could be.

Huh, I thought 291 was the latest release. The bizarre autoghosting incident is the only problem I've had with it, and, honestly, I don't know if that even was the problem--I'm not feeling brave enough to test it again and see if it's repeatable or was just a perfectly-timed coincidence.

291 is the latest release. Someone suggested 290, perhaps not realizing you had 291. My suggestion, for what little it's worth, is to go back to 287, which is absolutely, positively stable, and has very few issues, if any.

Oops, it is too.

I thought the latest official release was still 2.90. Oh well. I mean, I'm using the latest svn, for what it's worth, and that works fine by the way. I was simply not up to date. My bad! :D

After some judicious disabling of services, I've found the culprit: AAWWSC.exe, which is some component of Ad-Aware related to its update service. Killing it magically enables OBSE to do its thing, along with vanquishing all the general computer-related sluggishness that I'd thought was caused by damaged sectors. I don't know why or how, but hey, everything's working again.

Thank you for all the suggestions. :) This has been a mystifying and frustrating problem to solve.

Ad-Aware has a tendency to get in the way of several programs. I used it for about a year, then quit. If you want an anti-popup, anti-ad program, I suggest http://www.admuncher.com/. Far fewer conflicts, and works fine with Oblivion. It doesn't have Ad Aware's cookie control, but if you're using Firefox there are several add-ons (such as CookieSafe, which I use) that do the job.

I had the same problem with the "couldn't inject dll" message, but I found a different solution to the problem. I have to be connected to the Internet once, and then Oblivion starts. Even if I remove the internet cable Oblivion starts again. If I shut-down the PC and restart it, i have to plug in the internet cable again ONCE, start Oblivion via obse_loader and it will start. I have the GOTY Edition installed, the latest OSR-WIP and OBSE 2p5. I do not have STEAM installed.

I dont know if this information helps in finding a solution for this problem, but i would like to have it solved, since I often play Oblivion in Locations where I dont have access to the internet.
