Open Lock Spells - Could They Be Out?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 7:19 am

I've yet to see - anywhere - the alteration "open lock" spell sold or used in-game.

Do we have confirmation (or even a nod or hint from a reviewer or dev) that such spells are still in the game?

Is Lockpicking finally a necessity, as it was in Fallout 3/NV?

Really hoping those spells made the cut, because it makes more sense to use those for a mage (or even my warrior) than lockpicking for RP purposes. Either way, if it's out, I'll lockpick, but I definitely loved alteration for that.

To be fair, I hope they're out. No point on getting lockpicking if you can just cast a spell there.

Oh I think they are in. I know more than a few mages who would throw a fit if it were different.

Alterations open locks have been a TES thing at least since Morrowind.

You could just as well argue no point using a bow if you can just cast a fireball.
Can't have different playstyles and characters if theres only one way of doing things.

theres no way theyd remove it. they arent going to force a mage to level lockpicking... that would be silly.

lockpicking tree offers enough perks to make it worth it even if u have the open spell.

Um, it's not really a good anology. It takes away from the authenticity of going the thief path. Alteration already gets plenty of gadgets, thieves have a single skill dedicated just to this.

We cant talk about that. But they're in.

I cant say for sure if they scale all the way to master locks though.

If it is so then they've severely dumbed down the magic system. It seems we only get to choose from 3 different types of destructions spells: Fire, Frost and Shock. What the hell? Where's my dmg health and absorb health? Weakness to fire? Anything?

I hear you. I'm okay with no dmg health as its kinda too generic, but I sure hope there's an absorb health and Weakness-to spelllines too, but I havent seen any yet. And I've seen hours upon hours of Things I Should Not Have Seen.

Fingers crossed!

Having to sacrifice magicka for other things kind of makes up for it. Perhaps open spells will have some sort of limitation compared to lock picking.

Different strokes for different folks.

To be fair the majority of people who used those effects in Oblivion were gaming the spell creation system to make insanely overpowered and unbalanced spells for a lot cheaper than a normal damage elemental spell. Plus there's always mods.

Considering spellmaking is gone thats really not a reason to remove these spells per se.

Yes mods will add back alot of things but not for console users. Also, whilst a case could be made that weakness spells are unfun / annoying to use, "Absorb health" is really a trademark of the RPG genre and Necromancy. It would be really terrible to see it gone, especially when you consider how easy it is to implement.

Absorb health was governed by restoration. Hopefully it is there. It was a staple for my spellsword, since absorb health on touch is way more useful than a destruction spell.

It would be.....odd if it wasn't in. Picture an all powerful mage who couldn't get in a box. :flame:

It would be no worse than an all mighty warrior who can't break open the same simple wooded box. TES really needs a 'bash lock' feature...

Thank you! I've been trying to find a solid answer to this for the last week, to no avail until now.

My biggest worry is now abated.

I can confirm that at least one health-draining spell is in.

Appreciate that, thank you :)

(And not to be overly picky, but I assume you meant health-absorb rather than health-drain? If youve played Oblivion you'll understand why I mention it. In that game, 'health drain' was very different from health absorb, and essentially was all about lowering enemy health for a short amount of time rather than taking it for yourself)
