49+ Perks, too much?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 8:15 am

After reading about people fighting and killing dragons a very low level I am beginning to wonder if I will ever bother to take a character up to level 50. Will I ever really use 49+ perks. I see all these people making these 49+ perk builds, but will any of them really happen? I can't even image how powerful we'll be in this game by the time we're 20+ level. If I can knock out the MQ at level 25, will I really want to keep playing that character until they get to level 50?

I made many many spreadsheets with MW and OB characters on them. Built into the spreadsheet was a calculator that would calculate (assuming no jail time) the maximum level for the character. I have never, in 100+ characters between the two games, ever had a PC get to that max level.

Honestly I think building a character around about 30 perks with only 2 skills maybe being maxed at 100 is a lot more realistic.

Thoughts?

I think focusing on only two skills produces immensely shallow gameplay. I like and expect some diversity in how I can approach situations, as well as in what situations are presented to me.

If you're complaining about the fact that dragons are scaled ur ridiculous. If they weren't you'd die the second you start the main quest. I assume that near the time you get to level 40 those dragons will be monsters that you will be tired of restarting over.

There are different dragons with differing difficulty. Most you've seen killed have probably been that of the lower difficulty. Also, as a base to see if you need to improve, go fight a giant at a low level. Every video i've seen of this attempt has ending in the player dying in 1 hit. One guy even managed to kite the giant for 3-4 minutes and that giant hadnt even lost 25% of his health.

I'm certain had a low level player encountered one of the high level dragons and/or giants, he'd see a reason to level.

Also, there are high level dungeons. I'm certain a low level player would have lots of fun in a 40+ dungeon.

Yeah, I feel like this too. You CAN make a highly focused character that will probably be pretty cracked out by the low 30's but it would be much more fun to try and rank up as many different skills as you can. It's been said that raising higher level skills levels you FASTER, so you can get 5 or 10 or 20 ranks in a skill you've never used and not get so many character levels so quickly.

Well you can have perks in something without having a 100 skill in it.

I just think that actually planning out a level 50+ character may be unrealistic as generally by then you are so demi-god that playing isn't fun anymore and it's time to start a new character.

Depends on dragons. Some are easy to defeat while others are very hard or even impossible at certain level.
Just read a report from one guy, who said that during one quest he stumbled upon a dragon that killed him in one shot. After that he gain more levels and returned to that dragon and he was still unable to kill it although the fight was a little bit easier as he was actually able to deal some damage.

There are 79 perks available in game (74 from levels, 5 from a quest), NOT 49 ... and NO its not too much. Its a few points short of a third of the perks, as designed.

As for getting to 50, you WILL get there, leveling is very fast up to that point. Getting to 75 will take a bit more dedication but its entirely doable if you plan to really explore the world and play 100+hrs on a character.

As long as their are high enough level encounters to tackle, there's still the room for fun. But that depends on how well their math is.

My minimum interest is being able to well invest in 4 skills. Primary combat, secondary combat, defense, and utility. With some room left over to dabble in second utility.

Rough calculation, 4x12=48, and that's about what we have for a level 50 character.

Some people enjoy feeling like a god especially later in the game. My opinion would be to give the option to max and if a particular player didn't want to they could refrain from taking anymore perks.

I actually think I would be satisfied with 75-80 perks (as opposed to 70).

That option is said to be in. Perk selection is not mandatory. (Oblivion's MC did formally become a god.)

I think you have a point most characters won't obtain level 50. That being said I do believe there will be other opportunities to obtain perks aside from leveling.

I was wondering, Is it possible that we get extra perk points through special quests or items?

Have heard of one Daedric shrine quest reward which supposedly grants 5 bonus perk points, but that's it as far as I know.

Indeed, but 79 (which is the real maximum) = Acceptable. IMHO.

Yes, its the equivalent of the Oblivion quest that gave you a stat tome. The last Daedric quest, that you can only do after finishing the 15 basic Daedric quests. You also get an achievement for that.

Well considering that there is no oblivion style level scaling there is a reason to level up to 50 because there will be level 50 enemies, level 50 dungeons, and I"m pretty sure that Alduin will be really hard to fight if your not around the 45-50 level range.

79 is more than enough, but I'm never going to max out a full character. Might level into the high 50s for a few more perks but wont be going that high.

I'll still miss my Oblivion and Morrowind style MOAT.

In a later playthrough, I'll be sure to find mods that increase the difficulty and the amount of perks gained proportionally, in order to be able to have at least once a Dovakhinn that can do it all. If only in memory of past good times.

This perk system is undestandable but its still a fairly major nerf compared to the system of previous games.

From the early interviews about Skyrim, Todd Howard stated something to the effect that Morrowind and Oblivion were balanced to level 25, whereas Skyrim is balanced to level 50. If that's the case, then the question is whether you were still having fun with a character in those games at level 25? If so, then planning for 50 perks is probably reasonable.

Well that's good as I really wanted to max out Smithing so I could make the Dragon Armor.
