Modified Engine?

Post » Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:42 pm

I know that it's probably not possible but would the engine be modified in any way? I know that everyone would like to see multicpu support but I seem to remember reading that the engine would have to be rewritten from the ground up.
The reason that I mention the multicpu is that the processing speed becomes a bottleneck when using mods that add a lot of NPC activity.

The game has been finished, all they're doing now is fixing bugs and polishing it.

The game already supports dual-core CPUs, so muti-CPU support is moot. A single core is effectively its own CPU.

I think what OP is talking about is the multithreading issues with Gamebryo. Specifically, how trying to use more than two cores causes it to crash/freeze.

It would be nice to have fixed, even though my dual core won't notice.

What's a multicpu?

Dual core, Quad core, Hexa Core, Octo Core etc.. for a CPU that kind of stuff. And there's still tech like Hyper Threading which virtually creates twice as many cores if I'm right.

as stated, the game utilizes dual core.

People forget bethesa qre currently developing primarily for the xbox. not the PC. so adding support beyond the hardware capabilities of the xbox is not on their to do list. they make what can be considered ports to other platforms, ie PC & PS3. which will explain the UI on the PC and the reported bugginess on the PS3 versions of F3

I'm running FO3 on a dual-threaded Quad right now. Granted I've only just been plinking around messin' with stuff and goofin off, but the processor doesn't know that and I've had NO problems. No crashes, no freezes, nuthin. And I used to get them constantly on my old hunk of junk machine. Also, ultra max graphic on FO3 actually look pretty darn good. I never looked quite that way at the skin for the bottlecap mine before, but it's beautiful.

Probably gonna get shot for this but since I'm extremely dumb when it comes to computers and don't have the energy in me to look it up:
What's a "core"? (Quad-core, dual-core)

Well, in a nutshell, processors are usually much better if they have more cores. There are many exceptions to the rule, but yeah. Nowadays, if you have a computer that you use for more than just basic internet surfing, you want a dualcore. For gaming, quadcores are becoming the standard.

In short, a core is a processor core; but modern processors are actually a collection of multiple processor cores in a single package. There are still some low-end processors designed for economy system that come with a single core, but most basic CPUs have 2 cores, and fancier CPUs have up to 8 cores. This is only technically different from multiple CPUs, and in fact there are multiprocessor motherboards that take multi-core CPUs. Having two quad-core CPUs is not significantly different from having one octo-core CPU. Then there's hyperthreading which allows a single core to act like two. In each case, Windows sees each core as one CPU and each hyperthreaded core as two CPUs.
