FNV Runs Uses Only One Core on Quad Core System

Post » Sun Jan 02, 2011 12:16 pm

Hi guys,

I have two Windows 7 gadgets, which display CPU and GPU usages. I've been having stuttering problem when I ran on the full screen with high settings. I was curious about why it did that, so I ran the game on windowed mode. Here is what I found. For some reason my GPU only up to around 25%-30% while the CPU seems to use the first core extensively. When it stutters, it only maxed out the first core while the other three are around 30% maximum.

Has anyone notice that Fallout New Vegas only max out on one core only? I think this is reason why I have all these stuttering/lag problem.

I'm using AMD Phenom II X4 940
8 Gb of RAM
Win 7 64-bit
Geforce GTX 460

The game is designed to run primarily on Core 0. It is optimized for dual cores, but it wont take full use of quads. It is very CPU intensive, so the game will usually use more CPU then it will of the GPU.

Had the same problem when i bought my system as well [i7 920 inside]
But recently found out that Windows itself doesn't use the four core's as well. The cores can be activated tough.

Typ in your search box the following:
msconfig

a window will pop up,

click "boot" and then hit "advanced options"

again, a new window will pop up. With this windows your able to enable all of your cores :)

This fixed my problem in various games, now the cores are more divided and fixed the lag problem. Also the cpu temp dropped dramaticly

Note:
Picture is clickable for bigger size
With hyperthreading enabled your able to use up to 8 cores [4 cores from the CPU, 4 are virtiual]
Goodluck, hope it helps!

Using msconfig to set the core to 4 seems to increase the performance a bit more. It still has a little lagging, but much better than before. Thank you so much!
