10mm Pistols stacking in inventory?

Post » Mon Jan 03, 2011 4:12 am

I had a 10mm pistol in my inventory, with around 70% health. I then found a 10mm pistol in perfect condition in Nipton. When I picked it up, it seemed to stack on top of my other 10mm pistol.

I don't think this is supposed to happen. The two guns don't have the same condition, and the name didn't say (2) behind it as it should when things stack. I dropped and picked up both pistols and it keeps happening.

Which pistol I can see in my inventory and actually use depends on the order in which I picked them up: The first one I pick up is the one that appears in my inventory. The second won't appear until I drop the first one.

Has anyone seen this happen? I've never had 10mm pistols or other weapons stack like this before.

I had the SAME exact problem when buying a cowboy repeater and caravan shotgun in Novac. From what I can tell there really is no way around it, other then to carry it with you, drop'em both and then sell the one you don't want. But yeah, it's weird and it's happened to me twice another time was a bandana with 100 percent condition would go over the one I was already wearing.

I've had the same problem with other perfect condition items I've picked up (the one that springs to mind is a stormchaser hat).

Tell you the truth, with all the new inventory items I'm glad some things stack. If you have a modded weapon they won't stack with it, buy a scope or whatever as caps allow.

AHHH so Im not the only one?? I had a 10mm pistol at about 50% and I bought a 100% 10mm pistol in Novac. It never appeared in my inventory and I lost 800 caps. What a shame.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I have a modded Cowboy Repeater and it stacks. It's a bug. I didn't even notice it until I was going to sell a bunch of stuff. I was just going to drop most of my gear in my footlocker in Novac then load up the crap I had in there to walk over to sell said crap to the Dino Bite vendor. When I dropped my modded Cowboy Repeater into the footlocker it suddenly turned into three CRs.

it's a bug. I've had it with Legionary helmets and throwing spears too. Counts are also messed up when they do stack

So it sounds like it happens when one of the two objects is in perfect condition.

This happened to me with two Plasma Rifles, they both stacked on each other with no (2) indication. They were both in a completely different condition to one another.

I think that's the case, yeah. What I don't know and can't test at the moment is do these stacked items count against your encumbrance?

Yes.

That would be interesting about the "perfect condition" triggering the bug. I had not encountered it yet, but I never repair my weapons all the way up to full.

The big problem with the FO:NV inventory system is that the sort order does not also take secondary attributes like condition into effect. So your near-perfect condition 9mm pistol will float up and down in the inventory screen, mixed in with the other 9mm pistols. Remove a 9mm pistol from inventory, and the sort order randomizes itself again and your near-perfect 9mm pistol might appear anywhere within the clump of the other 9mm pistols.

Which may also be why there are bugs like non-equal equipment getting stacked - the sort order for equipment and weapons is not deterministic and the stacking logic may be assuming that it is deterministic.

Did some more testing, it's definitely the perfect condition that triggers the bug. Once I had used the gun with the perfect condition they would no longer stack, whereas dropping the guns in any order and picking them up in any order or firing the imperfect gun all did nothing to solve the bug.

One other way to separate the two was by hotkeying one. If you'd pick one up, hotkey it, and then pick the second one up, it won't stack.

It also sometimes does not stack identical fully-repaired copies of an item. Case in point: on my current character I had 3 fully-repaired Knives, none stolen*, and none of them would stack with another one. Had this been Combat Armor I would have been mightily pissed as this char only has 6 STR and no +carry perks yet, but it was still somewhat annoying as I am anol about having an orderly inventory.

This is particularly noticeable when repairing up multiple sets of Raider armor, which leads me to believe that it is separating items by what was used to repair them. It does keep track of this since the item in question gets removed by the repair script, but since the end items all have the same ID one would think they would stack regardless, since upon leaving the Repair menu what was used for parts no longer matters.

*I mention this since experience has shown that stolen and non-stolen items often do not stack.

I ran into this bug as well - this needs to be fixed.

I had 4 of an item, but it showed as only one. It didn't show up as (4).

If I dropped one, then I saw (3) in my inventory.

If I tried to sell all 4, it got rid of all 4, but only paid me for 1.

I had to drop the one that was messing it up, go sell the 3, then come back for the 1, and sell the 1.

Hope this will be fixed.

I wonder what the cause is, I've never seen such a thing happen in FO3 anyway.
