Trouble aiming @ head in VATS?

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 11:34 pm

When I enter VATS, if the first part of the enemy that is selected isn't the head, many times I'll have trouble selecting the head for a head shot. I will move the stick up, down, left, right and diagonal in every direction but the head will never be selected. It's not an issue of the angle or distance making me unable to get a headshot because I'm talking about times when it will say for example Head 25%, it's just really hard to select it. If I sit there and fiddle with it for a few minutes I can usually select the head eventually. It's just really annoying. This has happened to me ever since Fallout 3 and my wireless controller is really old and worn in. I've had it since Xbox 360 launch day so it may have something to do with that, but I'm pretty sure it happens with my newer wired controller as well. Does this happen to anyone else?

This happens to me quite a lot, not really with humanoids, but it's a real problem with a lot of insects and such, I'm guessing as far as my problems go this is an engine issue as I had similar problems with Fallout 3.

It's just something I've always dealt with and never seen anyone else mention it. My friend was watching me switch between body parts over and over again and was like, "What the hell are you doing?" That's when I remembered that it shouldn't be like that, I've gotten so used to doing it.

yup - never seems to happen with humanoids but happens all the time in fighting insects. It appears most frequently if I'm looking straight-on at the bug.

It is as if there's no option at all on the map of the body for getting to the head, despite the % odds to hit being calculated and displayed.

I know the 2nd update is probably done, but how about working on fixing this issue for a future update? I can't imagine Bethesda/Obsidian isn't aware of this issue. Wouldn't the Xbox 360 testers have noticed this when Fallout 3 was in production? Maybe it's just an engine issue and cannot be fixed with an update. Please fix this for Fallout 4.

What would be nice is if there was a cycle, up for head, up & left for the arm, and so on, nothing has more than 8 body parts. I was also thinking of another way but the logic failed a bit.

Well at least you've thought about it more than Bethesda or Obsidian has.

I don't think I've been able to select the head on a cazador once in over 100 hours. The closest I get is the antenna. I have the sniper perk so it is annoying. I think they should made VATS autoselect the body part with the highest chance for a successful attack.

Somebody said they can only select a Cazador head from the front and have problems from the side. For me it's the opposite. From the front usually the head will be the first body part selected so it's fine, but if another part is highlighted first, I cannot ever switch to the head. Only the antennae. From the side it's usually less difficult to select the head. Less being the operative word here, it's still difficult. The more I think about it the more it bugs me (no pun intended) that this issue has gone unchecked for so long. It's a fairly big problem with these games on 360. I wonder if PS3 players experience this problem as well. I bet they do.

Sorry Morlac, I had had misread your post. Both of us have more problems from the front of a Cazador. I think it's the same for everyone.

I would like to hear from a PS3 player if one happens to read this. Probably not too many reading the Xbox 360 software issues forum though.

The best way around this is to face the enemy with it's head in front of you (Notably with insects). The annoyance happens to me sometimes, so this usually works.

Ditto... When it came to insects, I had this issue all the time in Fallout 3.

Its an issue with Bethesda's engine and/or thumb stick targeting scheme.

Do cazadors frenzy? If so the selection of antenna may be by design. I do remember having some issues targeting ant heads in FO3 but not to same extent as cazadors.

This problem happens to me,also happened in F3,you could spend half hour trying to choose the head in v.a.t.s. mode!,i found if you back out & wait for the target to get closer this solves it.minor issue i can deal with.most developers produce a game and iron out the issues in the follow up game, these are the first developers i've heard of that take a games glitches and build on them for the follow up!

Well I guess Obsidian developed this game and was also working with the engine for the first time and who knows exactly how much involvement Bethesda had in the actual developement, but you'd think this issue would be addressed in some way regardless. Before I made this post I figured the problem was with my old thumbstick on my old controller, guess not.
