Why does it look so low res?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:28 am

Is it because all the demos are running off console versions or something? I feel like a lot of the new meshes look lower poly and a lot of the new textures don't have as much bump map type stuff on them as FO3. Like the graphics don't look the same they look...worse? I'm not a troll or anything, I have no doubt it will look great, and will play even better, especially on PC with all the fantastic mods this community puts out, but it just feels odd.

Does it really matter how low poly the mesh is so long as its textured well?

**minimum graphics on the demos are expected, I suppose; but I don't see anything wrong with what I've seen of NV
(with one odd exception: Models do not appear to be normal mapped ~they probably are, but I just don't see any effect).

Look at this one...

I think it's looking pretty good so far, to be honest. Maybe its because of the more diverse color palette? It definitely makes the contrast between objects pop a little more.

...or maybe we're just over-anolyzing because we have nothing to do but speculate about things.

My eyes certainly aren't the problem, and I mentioned the textured thing, because in FO3 it seems that most everything is beautifully textured which adds a lot of detail, whereas the new buildings (namely the casinos) look really flat and lack any apparent ware & tear or grime that they would have accumulated over the years, I really doubt anyone in the post apocalypse would be refurbishing a cherry picker to go and fix and clean broken and dirty architecture. I wouldn't mind so much if the FO3 assets had been the same, it's just that I feel less time or care has gone into making the new assets, as welcome as they are.

They looked lo-res until I saw one vid (the Japanese one); I don't know if it was 720p, but it looked sharp as hell.

I think most the vids are pretty lo - res. They're videos compressed for web so most of the game footy kind of looks crappy.

I used to think the graphics were kind of weak too but I watched a couple hi res clips they had on PSN and the graphics actually looked fairly crispy.

Have you ever video taped your TV? It looks like crap no matter how you do it. Couple that with the monitors are large in size and the camera is close. If you sat that close to a Hi Def screen playing a video game, it would look worse than if you were sitting 10 to 15 feet away like most people do.

Plus, the demos are always on the 360. This is not a criticism of that platform, but it does not have the same eye candy the PC version does, mostly due to increased resolution on the PC. Also, these builds tend to have toned down eye candy so that performance does not become an issue during demos. Not sure if that is the case for this game or not.

I felt the 360 version looked fine when I played it on my 47 Inch LCD TV. So even on the console, in real life the game will look as good as FO3 played on the 360.

i have to agree with the two above post most of the videos on the web make the game look pretty bad but the videos off of psn look a hell of a lot better, also take into consideration that we have now idea what builds anything thats shown is from it could be six months old for all we know. i'm fairly certain obsidian is a least going to stick with FO3 quality if not better and i doubt bethesda would let them get away with low quality if they tried.

The PSN videos are probably taken directly from the game as a stream capture, rather than video taped (I know the new cameras use hard drives, but video hard drived just does not work for me).

So, it is probably the best representation of what the game will look like on folks TVs who play on consoles. As I said before, the game does look good on a TV played off of the console, at least FO3 did.

If you are refering to the E3 videos, that was when F:NV was in Alpha phase, so they were focusing on the game, Fine polish comes later on in Beta and etc. And if you eman these 'gameplay vids' at cons. Well, like the above posters said, You cant expect a crappy offscreen recording to do the game justice.

I think it would be better to withhold judgement on the graphics until we can see them ourselves on our own systems.

i think it looks ten times better than Fallout 3 did just from seeing footage from the developer diaries and other places. Soo I don't know what to tell the OP.

As they're reusing many resources from Fallout 3, it should be on about the same level of graphical complexity. Whether it looks better or not we have yet to see - but that won't come from how detailed the models or textures are.

Go on the PS Browser,
go to the Fallout main site,
find the Dev Diaries,
open "File"
save target as,
then download it to your PS3.
It looks amazing.

At worst FNV on Ultra will look the same as Fallout 3 on Ultra which is fine by me.
