No. But you might not appreciate some of the things they put in there that people who have played the first two games would recognize.

Nope. If you can catch on to the basics of the setting, than you should be fine. It'll be like playing Bioshock for the first time, for you. Weird, but amusing and interesting.

"The First" as in Fallout 1, or Fallout 3? Cause there were quite a few before Fallout: New Vegas....

If you have any interest in playing Fallout or Fallout 2, don't use the following advice (major spoilers, probably): To avoid being confused at backstory, read the fallout wiki. Use http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_Dweller%27s_memoirs as a starting point.

They are all stand alone games so you will be fine. Just be prepared to want to go back and play the others. :)

Just read the wiki like I did. Then I got really into it and bought the originals. Best $10 I've ever spent :D

You should be fine. I hadn't played the first two fallout games before picking up Fallout 3 and I was just fine. I assume it will be the same if you have not played the previous ones before picking up New Vegas. Also, while you may miss some back story, it should not harm your enjoyment of the game. Plus, it is pretty easy to pick up the general story, though some of the details you may have to ask here on the forums.

Okay, forget my earlier advice. I thought you had played FO3. If this is your first, DEFINITELY play it raw without looking at the wiki. Come to the forums and ask for non-spoiler help before looking up a walkthrough. Seriously, you will enjoy it. Then, if you're interested, play Fallout 3, then Fallout 1, then 2, then maybe Tactics (I haven't beat Tactics, myself). Yep, that's ALL the Fallout games. All of them indeed.

They are all in the same universe. There will be some returning characters from the first 2 games, as well as some large references. As for Fallout 3, there is supposed to be a small amount of references in game. I agree that reading the wiki is a good idea if you plan on not going back to the originals.

They are stand alone games but New Vegas does have a lot of lore from Fallout 1 and 2

I'd say Fallout 3 did a good job of at least reintroducing the series because the West Coast already had so much going for it while the East Coast didn't have much established. For some reason though Fallout New Vegas doesn't seem like it will be as forgiving in that sense. I'd say at least try to play Fallout 2 as it will help out a lot in terms of understanding factions and the history of the area.

go play fallout 1 and fallout 2...you can download both for $5.99 each @ gog.com

Fallout New Vegas takes place on the west coast(just like FO1 and FO 2)...FO 3 took place on the east coast(which made it feel NOT so much like FO)....

you'll be fine playing FO NV...just at some point go play FO 1 and FO 2..or at least FO 2.

No the devs have said no matter what games you have played in this franchise, if any, you should still get the full extent of your enjoyment.

No, and you'll be going into the game with no preconceived ideas of how anything was or should be. You're in a good place, relish it. :vaultboy:
