Weight Problem

Post » Sun Jan 09, 2011 9:39 pm

Hello. the pip-boy says I am carrying 250 pounds of weight, and it cannot be true. I went through all my items and I can only count less than 70 pounds. So I am apparently carrying too much but it's hard to solve this issue since I do not have much on me to transfer to my companions. I am not playing hardcoe, so ammo does not count.

Before I had this issue, I was already supposedly carrying 140 pounds and I found it weird, but now it's stops me from playing! This additional weight increase came up after using the workbench and reloading bench, in order to recycle create ammo. While I was doing it, I started getting the over-encumbered message. The leads, cases, powders, primes and so on don't have weight unless in hardcoe, right?

In any case, these are the items that have weight and that are on me:

- All American (1) - 6 pounds
- Anti-Material Rifle (1) - 20 pounds
- Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle (1) - 4.5 pounds
- 1st Recon Barret (1) - 1 pound
- NCR Ranger Combat Armor (1) - 30 pounds
- Stealth Boy (1) - 1 pound
- Caravan deck (1) - 1 pound
- Howitzer Firing Mechanism (1) - 1 pound
- The Platinum Chip (1) - 1 pound

This would all add up to a total of 66 pounds... Am I missing any other weight source? I see 5 tabs in the pip-boy Items group, but are there more somewhere?

Thanks!

So, your encumbrance setting says "250/200" or similar?

Are you on the PC or a console?

Indeed. It says 250/210 and I am using a PC, therefore with access to the console...

Try in the console

scof "weight.txt"
player.inv

I think that will print a list of your inventory to a txt file. It should show hidden items.

edit: You can post that in a spoiler box. You may want to eliminate all keys and other items that are definitely weightless first.

If that is the same as what you typed out before, then you'll probably have to try resetting your information through the console.

Or someone cast a "Burden" spell on you. Have you seen any Altmer around lately?

I am a complete nerd using the console. I tried: scof "weight.txt" player.inv but it did not work. You wrote it in 2 different lines and I assumed it had a space between the 2 parts, but is that so? If not, how do I change to a second line without hitting enter/return?

It's two entries:

scof "weight.txt"
player.inv

Then there should be a file called weight.txt in your New Vegas directory (same directory as the FalloutNV.exe

Great, got the list. Now I will go through that thing and check for all the items that have an associated weight. If the problem still remains, I am considering the possibility of adding the difference (attributed wight of 250 minus the real weight of 67) to my maximum weight capacity, so I can run around... Not a clean solution, but it works and I would not be adding something I am not entitled to, right?

Cheers

If you have a definite discrepancy and can't find the answer (taking into account that some apparently weightless items have weight (like lead from bullets) then I'd probably find out the exact difference (48 units for instance) and try

player.modav InventoryWeight -48

But that would be a last resort.

Well I have the list alright, but there seems to be no weight associated to each item. So how can I debug this?

Post the list in a spoiler tag. I'll see what I can dig up for you in the GECK.

well I guess one of the first things to check is if there are items in the inventory output you don't see in your inventory. Unless you are on hardcoe (which you aren't) mode you can ignore ammo of course.

I'm thinking that it may have something to do with purchasing powder jars, ammo boxes, and other bulk things. They boxes of casings and such have a weight listed to them but they are opened upon purchase and replaced with their weightless contents. I'm thinking there may be a glitch where the weight from that bulk package does not dissapear when the object is opened. Also it may be possible that the weight of items consumed at your workbenches is somehow not going away from your total inventory count.

To check these things- go to a vender that sells case boxes or pirmer boxes or power jars. Purchase some of them and you should see messages after the sale showing "25 x cases added." Note whether or not your inventory weight goes up after purchasing that item despite it being "opened" and replaced with its weightless contents.

Similarly you can test to see if the weights of items consumed at a workbench (weapon repair kits are the most likely culprit along with timebombs). Note whether or not your inventory weight goes up by the weight of what you created or down by some other larger number (the difference between the created item and sum of its parts). If it goes up it's a likely source of your problem. If it goes down then well it probably isn't but you can always do the math to make sure it goes down as much as it should- if it doesn't it would still be a source of unaccounted for weight.

No need my friend. Just found out what the problem is: lead! I saved the game in a new slot, then started throwing all my "Misc" stuff to the ground. The second I got rid of the Lead, I went to 62 pounds. No other item caused a change. Probably this means I wont be able to deal with ammo, but that's ok, I think I managed to get enough so far :-)

That means you had more than 134000 pieces of lead.

Why?

I never carry more than a thousand. Any more I need is always recovered from the ammo I'm stripping.

Funny thing is that while with the weight problem, pip-boy showed an amazing 134473 pieces of lead. No weight identified though. The minute I drop all to the ground I get down to 62 pounds of weight with me. I can then pick up 3401 pieces from the ground (the rest vanishes) and I raise to 67 pounds of weight with me. Lead seems to have some kind of weight after all :-)

Indeed I was, 134000+! Well to tell you the truth, I never fully understood the recipes and I never thought lead would weight whatever amount, so there... Then again, I NEVER said I was smart, hehehe

Maybe it rounds down below the number of significant digits being shown. And you thought you were done with significant digits when you escaped your last chemistry class didn't you? Oh no- there is no escape, none at all.

0.0014

Too low to register in the game at all due to the limited number of digits available.

I think it's the only thing that is like that. Legion Denarii are 0.0080, which is just enough to get bumped up to 0.01 by the display.

I see. Well problem solved then! I will go on playing a bit, since I already played it till the end, but when I realized I missed some things, so I am coming back. Cheers!
