Potential fix for constant CTD (maybe)

Post » Sat Jan 15, 2011 1:28 am

I'm one of the people that suffers from constant CTDs every 10-20 minutes (closer to 10min). My CTD would always be preceded by the sound going away and then poof, game crashed.

My computer's only 1 month old and I don't have much stuff so I know it's none of the codec issues listed as possible issues. However, I am a Howard Stern fan and I use Replay A/V to record the show. This program is always on in the background and since I figured the CTDs were occurring due to sound issues (or at least it seemed this way due to the loss of sound prior to each CTD), I wondered what would happen if I turned Replay A/V off. Well, sure enough, I was able to play for about 40min straight without a CTD. You might say "40 minutes is nothing!" but trust me, based on my experience since I bought the game, it's huge.

I'm going to play more this weekend and monitor this and report back, but it seems like if this constant CTD issue is happening to you, make sure you turn off every background audio task that you may have going on as this game doesn't seem to like any conflict whatsoever.

Just wanted to chime in that I had the sound disappearing on me also prior to CTD. Turned out my Avira anti-virus v.10 was causing a huge memory leak, and downgrading to v.9 fixed it for me.

If you also use Avira v.10, please refer to this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1140490-attention-avira-v10-users/

Thanks, I did read that thread. I don't use Avira. I use Norton 360. Don't know if anyone's experienced issues with that.

Well, I went ahead and played FONV today for a solid 2 hours without a single CTD. Based on that, I'd indeed conclude that Replay A/V and Fallout don't play nice together. As I said, my past experience was that I'd only be able to play 10-20 min before CTD. Anyone that's having the same issue should look at what audio programs they're running in the background and turn them off. It may help.
