Credit; 60 versus 59 Oblivion Gates

(PC Version)

Apparantly, when "most" people play the Main Quest and close every Oblivion Gate they can, they end up with credit for having closed 59 Oblivion Gates, even though they actually closed 60.

(and why "most" people, as the UESP indicates, do "some" people not have this problem?? Arglebargle. Confusion.)

From what I can piece together from the UESP, this is because "usually" the player does not actually get credit for closing the "Great Gate". (correct me if I'm wrong...)

The UESP has a solution posted: be sure and leave one random gate open; quote:

Some players have had problems making the accomplishment page state that 60 gates have been closed. In this situation, you must leave one random gate open until after closing the Great Gate. Prior to closing either of these last two, your accomplishment page will read 58. Even after you close the Great Gate, the accomplishment page will not change to 59. Only after you close the last standing random gate will both that gate and the Great Gate register as closed, giving you a total of 60.

BUT on the "talk" page for this issue, apparantly there might be a problem, quote:

When I shut all Ob gates I was following the suggestion "If you want your accomplishment page to read the total 60, then you must leave one random gate open until after closing the Great Gate.". After closing the last random gate I was unable to travel to the surrounding area of the last random gate. In my case Narfinsel, Serpent Hollow Cave, Molag Bal's Shrine, Fort Carmala and the Ob gate. When I fast travelled, the game stopped loading after ~10-50%. If I travelled by foots/horse the games was freezing just before I saw the place (Loading area...). I became aware of the problem several level later then I was heading for Molag Bal's Shrine to do the Conjuration Training. To solve the problem I had to reload an old save and close the last random Ob gate before the great Ob gate. Summary: No problem to get 60 on the accomplishment page even if you close the Great Gate last. Maybe the note is for an old version. If someone can confirm this, it might be a good thing to remove this tip, since it could result in a glitch (I'm on Xbox). --Robert Smith 02:29, 19 May 2007 (EDT)

Note: This was an XBox player; may or may not make a difference?

I've started over a new game (again, and again and again and again...); has anyone explored this issue for definitive solutions?
... Thanks

EDIT! Darnit!

I should mention that previously I have only played beyond Level 17 once. I only got credit for 59 gates, and I'm pretty sure I visited EVERY possible random gate location (used info / maps from UESP).

I've only worked on closing all 60 gates once, just to do it, and left one gate open until after the Great Gate. It did count that way, but I didn't test it to see if it still would have counted had I done the Great Gate last, nor did I do any other testing.

I never noticed a problem with fast traveling to the area surrounding the last random gate though. That may have been a fluke, or just not a PC problem

Thanks, Drewbster.

I think I will do it that way then... when I get to Level 17 I will make a safety save, and see if I can't get all 60 gates counted.
