Other than a couple laying around (and I do mean only a couple) chet is the only place to get one.

So far, I've only used it for digging up graves. Good for low levels.

When you do Sunny's tutorial check beside the second spring.
Or do it before the tutorial -- it's one of my first stops.

Yes, LoL - there are freshly dug graves all over the place!
And when you click on them, it says you need a shovel.
I never knew where to find a shovel until now, thanks guys...
But y'know, I think I'll let those guys RIP anyway.

There are two graves near Goodsprings that are well worth looting. One's easy to get to (if you search carefully you might spot a big cross) and the other has pretty butterflies around it so it's chancy.

I just get one from chet in goodsprings. What bugs be is I come across them on the ground and in shacks but I can't pick them up. Wondering if that's a bug.

Its not just shovels, but wielding torches and at least one broom and a few others if you scan around abit Styles, the NCR base at the airport inside a tent is a good place to find some.
Either these are left overs from FO3 where you occasionally had to activate an object, the tune puzzle inside the sim to find dad is the best example.

Or they're some cut or upcoming content, a dlc, or alternitive to repair kits.

The shovel by the second fountain in goodsprings is at 100% health and free, it's always best to get that one.

I noticed that as well. There is a wielding torch in Nipton but I can't move it. I figured it was for a quest of something. Maybe future DLC like you said. Like the OP on my first play through I wanted to dig up some graves but need a shovel. I finally found one in a shack (can't remember which one) and I could not pick it up. I was so mad, thought It would be like FO2.

There are graves in many locations but I find many have little if anything. There is one with some great items but thats about it. I like how the graves have names on them like FO2 but FO2 also had unique items and better weapons and armour in the graves and there were alot more. I am happy grave robbing is back, I was asking for it alot. When I saw the grave yard in the trailer I thought "I can't wait to rob all those graves" then I find out theres only what five? (at goodsprings)

You love your FO Styles, I must admit I loved that grave robbing came back, I just wish a lot of the non steam perk / achievments like Grave robber did as well.
That and FO3's random encounters Burke and Hare, the frankenstien guild... something along those lines if you loot over a certain amount.

Heh, I remember the funny stuff you could find in the Den graveyard in FO2, as well as the 'Grave Robber' perk you got for opening them. :D

I always make sure to grab the shovel at the second wellhead in Goodsprings Source, and then whenever I find a grave site I hop back to base and grab it. Not that I ever find much in them, but it never hurts to look.

Aside from Goodsprings Graveyard and Yangtze Memorial, I have also found two grave sites in Novac, next to one of the boarded-up houses. I haven't thoroughly explored most of the Mojave yet so there are probably more I haven't found, but I suspect there are not that many of them in total, especially compared to FO2 which had dozens just between The Den and the New Reno graveyard.

there's also a good 10-12 graves at Bitter Springs too.. mostly all ammo though.. but one Great Khan helmet atop a grave I think. (found them actually after Boone's personal quest. I don't think I'd noticed the 'break' in the cliff walls prior.

Boone comments on the graveyard

I wish the shovel had higher dt and dam level, though, so you could use it more for melee at higher levels. That way you wouldn't have to carry both a shovel AND a fire axe/machete/sledgehammer.

It'd kind of make sense, too, since you could really f--- a person up by whanging them in the head with a shovel. I think I remember Tom Joad beating a man to death with one at the end of Graqes of Wrath. Yikes.

i left the mohave outpost and followed the cliff edge north toward lone wolf radio, theres a couple of graves hard up against the cliff, reasonably high up overlooking the wasteland.
