Do companions need to be disguised?

I have Brotherhood power armor for Veronica, and I wonder if she can wear it without alienating NCR and other factions. Does anyone know?

Also, does headgear count towards disguise? It's a bit weird to me that I was able to pass for a Great Khan in Vault 3 with the 1st Recon beret on my head.

Companions seem to be entirely ignored by all factions except once combat actually starts (aside from occasional snide remarks). Factions react only to you.

Some people have claimed that disguises work better with headgear and glasses/masks, but I haven't seen anything in the GECK that indicates this is true.

Agree. Nor have I seen any indication in gameplay.
