Searchlight and Radiation Poisoning

Post » Wed Dec 08, 2010 3:03 pm

The other day I stumbled upon Searchlight. However, I couldn't enter due to the high levels of radiation. You see, I walk everywhere; running is very rarely used. There is no way I can explore that town walking everywhere. Radiation poisoning would build up to fast. I know there are chemicals/drugs to give protection and some to remove radiation poisoning, but I feel like I'd need a ton of them to do anything in that town. Will I ever come upon some kind of radiation protection suit that will allow me to explore that town without having to stockpile drugs?

You can find radiation suits here and there, but you'll always recieve at least 1 rad/sec no matter how high your resistance is.

Now, if I had to go into an area with radiation, I'd hurry the hell up! Perhaps your character, no matter how stoic he may be, would do the same?

The http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Space_suit is best but, rad suits and T-51b armor also give Rad. Res.

Rad-X is like Med-X for radiation, RadAway is like Stimpacks for radiation. Space suit has +40 Rad Res plus you can also pop on a power armor helmet for the additional rad res, advanced radiation suit also has +40 but cannot have headgear.

Check out the Crescent Canyon southeast of Nipton for a little something to help with that. I did the quest there, and barely escaped with 972 rads and all Rad Aways gone. Vault 34 is another highly radioactive place. Apart from those, there really aren't irradiated areas. Well, Broc Flower Cave a little.

I have done that town with 2 Rad-X's and a couple of Rad A Aways. However a Radiation suit is very helpful, even if it is a normal one.

I think the PipBoy reports go no lower than 1 Rad/Sec, but your actually absorption rate is lower if you have protection from Rad X or a Suit.

On a side note, where do you get the keys to access the buildings in searchlight. ( Police station, fire station?)

Search around and talk to anyone that will talk to you. You'll find your answer.

Thanks for the info everyone. I guess I'll wait until I can get some gear that will protect me from the radiation. Between that and the drugs, hopefully I can make it. I may have to do it in multiple small trips, going to and from the doctor in Novac.

This is true, with 85% resistance (rad-X plus space suit and 7? endurance) I stood in a +1 rad/sec place (as in, normally +1 rad/sec with rad resistance of 15% odd) and got one every 7 or 8 seconds or something, it goes up very slowly. Of course as the rads go up it will climb faster, if you're in a normally +4 area with 85% resistance it should still be less than one, but not much.

There is also an advanced radiation suit near Novac. On the pip-boy map look at Novac and take the road east then south, should be a kinda windy road (you want to follow the road, not come from the south, trust me). There are dangerous animals in the ruins for lower level characters but if you're careful you can get the suit easily without being spotted, it's on a fella in front of the ruins.

While wandering around Searchlight, you will meet up with someone who has the keys.

There are also a coupla rad perks. Lvl 8 rad resistance and lvl 28 rad absorbtion. If you feel you must walk, you may find these perks more utile than others would. I don't think I've ever taken one in FONV, but used to all the time in FO3.
