Craig Boone, Legion, and Reputation

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 2:09 pm

After searching the forums I could not find any answers as to how Boone affects faction status even after sending him back to Novac, so here we go:

I am 9 hours into the game, my character is at level 8, and I am happily neutral with the Legion faction. Actually, I hate them but after having a nasty experience with their Legionnaire Assassins in a previous game, I want to stay on their good side until I'm strong enough. My first question is: If I recruit Boone and then dismiss him, will Legion soldiers still show up as hostiles on my compass even if I never had any hostile contact with them? My second question is: At what level (on hard mode, hardcoe difficulty turned on) do you think it's best to become hostile towards the Legion faction and stand a chance against their Assassins?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

If Boone did not kill any Legionaries while wuith you, then no, they will not hold a grudge. Level 15 is a good choice if you plan on regularly facing hordes of Legion troops, but you can pull it off much earlier if you're well prepared.

*spoiler spoiler spoiler*
Spoiler
I'm under the impression it doesn't matter what you do as long as you don't wipe out any key locations or faction underlings (if you do you won't get an opportunity at some of that faction's quests - if you wanna later), as when you reach the Strip you're given a pardon for past transgressions against Legion / NCR etc. If I'd known that before I reached the Strip I wouldn't have been so completely neutral with all but some of the small towns. Being neutral as a character is hard (neutral with the factions is easy) BTW, you seem to get good karma without even noticing it in New Vegas. But yeah, those LegionEars you come across and kill while supporting the NCR, you'll recieve a pardon later on and your reputation will go back to neutral.

@The Lou: What if Boone killed a Legion soldier while I did nothing in the background? When I dismiss Boone, does that mean the Legion will still hold a grudge against me?

I really want to take Boone along with me but I don't want to get him and Ed-E killed should we ever come across Legion Assassins so early in the game. I figure I could take him along but simply sneak around any Legion soldiers out in the wasteland, and if what you say is true about no kills=no grudge, then I guess this is a valid approach.

@Oni One: Glad you told me about that. Definitely something to consider as I play the game.

Thanks for the responses so far.

If he kills any while in your company, I think you'll take the blame and the rep hit. Afterall, you do share in the XP from your followers' kills, so I would expect that you also share the responsibility for their actions.

In my experience, any faction that is hostile towards the NCR such as the Legion and the BoS, will show as red ticks on your compass if Boone is following you. Boone will attack them if you are close enough and you will take the reputation hit for it. I remember getting my ass handed to me by the BoS shortly after BoS made swiss cheese out of ED-E and Boone, because of it. =p I had to reload a previous save and leave Boone @ Novac before I revisited the BoS...
