Serial key is in use?

Everytime i attempt to join a multiplayer session with people in it, i get a message saying that my serial is already use, however, i am able to join a completely empty server. Whats goin on?

what is going on i got a gift from a friend of my in steam i downloaded the game installed created an account for online play enterd the key that i got from steam hit on online play and get the message key is in use??? WTF
