Well the ceph are aliens, my guess is that signal transmitted from the alien artefact in crysis 1 (assuming the ceph are the same aliens despite differences from crysis 1 & 2) was a call for help/reinforcements to the cephs homeworld. Crysis 2 saw them eradicated from New York but that still leaves the rest of the world and the signal which wasn't explained in crysis 2 as well as other plotholes from lingshan.

My guess is if crysis 3 does come the story will be an all out alien invasion and not just from underground.

I think Cevat had a vision and made Crysis to prepare us for the Ceph arrival.
If they don't come, Crysis is gonna get reclassified from Sci-fi to "alternative history".
