My thoughts on Crysis 2

I would like to begin by saying that I am a big fan of the Crysis series and have been following all of the news concerning the development and release of Crysis 2 for some time. I decided not to post my thoughts on the game, any media postings or rumors until it was officially released because it would have been complete speculation and that is not fair to anyone. I played the multi-player demo for about a week and have played the campaign for several hours. I'm a casual player and usually play only for a few late night hours here and there since I have a busy life and two little kids. Here are my thoughts based on what I have experienced so far.

Here are my system specs for reference:
i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz
GTX 560Ti Twin Frozr II (purchased specifically for this game)
ASUS P6T
12GB Supertalent Chrome
650W Antec Earthwatts
1680 X 1050

Single Player:
When it comes to the graphics settings I don't mind that there are only 3 presets but they are not implemented well enough. I wish that they were "smart" presets that recognized your hardware and resolution then configured each of those 3 settings to your optimal levels in order to give you the best personalized gaming experience. The three setting by themselves in their current state are pretty useless actually since you have no idea what they represent. And I think that the lowest setting should be called "low" and not "high". That's like Starbucks calling their small size a "tall". This makes no sense. In addition it is only fitting that a game catering to a crowd of enthusiasts would have an "advanced" button where you can configure all the settings to your gpu's delight. That's why we spend money on products that you promote (NVIDIA).

Game play is fun and the visuals are very cinematic and beautifully portrayed. I do feel that the field of view is rather narrow and it's as if I want to take it all in but I can't. I would like to open that up a bit. I started the game in Extreme graphics setting. I play at 1680 X 1050. The game seemed to be choppy but I continued to play it. However, the frame rates were between 45 - 60 so I'm not quite sure why it was playing choppy so I enabled v-sync and it was the same. So I lowered the settings to Very High and played again. It was still choppy in places but the frame rates were now between 90-110. I think this was odd and not sure what is causing it. I overclocked the gpu a decent amount and it helped but that should not be necessary. Something is fishy there.

I found the game to be a little difficult at first but I'm getting the hang of it. Not to sure why you have to switch to frag first then throw as that wastes a lot of time in a fire fight. It should be insta-throw as in other fps games. It's nice that you can carry all of your weapons then temporarily pickup a specialty weapon without fore fitting one of your own. There have been times where melee does not work and times where I get stuck walking in a certain direction. I'm sure those things will get ironed out in time. More times than one I have found myself walking aimlessly trying to figure out what to do next. There is little direction given at times and that annoys me because I'm not having fun at that point. Games are made to have fun. The cover system works well but takes some getting used to. It doesn't feel natural yet. It also takes too long to unlock upgrades for the Nano suit.

For the most part I think the game is fun and the graphics are fantastic. I don't know what everyone's expectations were but I think it looks damn good and Crytek has done a great job at pulling it off. I do wish that we would have been given the eye candy of DX11 from day 1 but it is what it is. Hopefully when it does come it adds some flair to the experience without taking a performance hit.

Multiplayer:
I've only played the demo version so far and would rather comment on the final version which I am yet to play. I prefer to play through the campaign first then join the multi player. After I get some time with the multiplayer again I will post my thoughts.

I would also like to add something. As a PC gamer I enjoy being able to tweak my rig and configure aspects of games which make the whole experience that much funner. Lately though I see PC gamers as the crowd that gets credited for complaining, trashing, and stomping on the efforts of those that try to innovate for the industry. I'm not just talking about Crytek. If you don't like a product then don't buy it. It's that simple. If you think the risk is worth the money then get it knowing full well that it's a risk. Don't ruin the experience for the rest of us by being so negative. Instead, point out what you would like to see improved.
