Crysis 2 suddenly causing incredible GPU temperates

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:19 am

Hi, hopefully this is the right place, I do need support so I think it would be.

Basically, I noticed this morning that when I'm playing Crysis 2, my computer goes to ridiculous temperatures. The CPU is at about 60 degrees C, while the GPU was at 70 (and 80 when I just tried again!). I only noticed due to the (strong) smell of burning.

I'm running it on High (can we have a patch so that we can have different settings for multiplayer and single player? High is necessary in Multiplayer so I have maximum FPS, but in single player I don't need to be at a constant 60+ FPS, so I'd prefer to play that in Extreme. Always having to switch options is annoying). System specs are;

Core 2 Quad 8400
Palit GTX 570
3.5 GB DDR2 RAM
650W (iirc) PSU

Has Crytek released a secret patch or anything? The game was running fine yesterday (I don't know about the temperatures as I didn't monitor them). Has anybody got any suggestions on how to keep my temperature down (ie programs to control fan speed).

Thanks!

It could just be a bit of dust. 80 isn't that hot, above 90 and you should really start worrying :)

Look up the thermal limits for your hardware! Those temps look about right to me but my hardware is different. You could try giving the inside of your case a thorough clean, clean any air filters your case might have and try doing some cable management to open up the air passages in your case.

It's likely your fans are running as they should, if they are not temp controlled already then they are likely running at max. You could get a fan controller for your case which allows you to turn up and down any fans as needed.

I had to stick another fan on my case this weekend to keep a lid on temps - Crysis 2 raises temps like no other game I've played.

It's not dust, the card's only 3 weeks old! I cleaned the entire computer case out as thoroughly as I could anyway.

The smell of burning is worrying me more than the temperature speedfan gives me.

I've got 3 fans working inside my PC. It's fine for any other game :/ I've never seen the temp go above 60 (with a normal idle temp of about 35). If I can't find anything that helps keep the temperature down I'll buy another fan (and hopefully that'll work, or I'll have to get a new case and then more fans! :(). I'm setting up vTune right now which will hopefully help.

(I've also just noticed that my 570 only has 1 fan, my 260 had 2 :/).

Edit: Palit does not mention the max temperature anywhere, not even in the (crappy) user manual!

Make sure the fans are actually working, some Nvidia chipsets and drivers the fan stays at ~40% usage no matter how hot or active the GPU gets. I've found with Crysis 2 I've had to manully set my GTX 260 to 100% fan usage when playing the game or it overheats within 15 minutes.

You can use the Nvidia system tools to manually set this:

Try EVGA Precision, I found that it was really good for controlling fans and giving good readings :)

I never liked those high temps. People say that's normal... and that's true, mostly, but the high temps do impact your other hardware as well and reduce the life expectancy of your components. Hense... I'm all liquid cooled. 3-way SLI and no card under full load ever gets above 55.

Check your power cord. I got a thin one when my local store built my spec'd out box and it fried. The result was a horrible burning smell. You may be able to put your hand on it and feel that it's hotter than normal. I've done this with a vacuum and noticed it hotter than normal.

Just felt it, it's normal temperature. The burning smell could be coming from the PSU, as it's above the GPU, so I might be mistaken! O:

Thanks! I've just downloaded it. Sadly the one instruction I gave it hasn't worked (if GPU goes over 55 degrees C, load this profile with fan speed 85%).

V Speed is pretty good so far, although I might try MSI Afterburner, which apparently has an overlay you can use as well, to see GPU temperature etc ingame (it might look horrid being placed on top of the steam overlay though lol).

It could be the ambient temperature. Have you noticed the air feels different? I know that I can control the temperature in my room extremely well, I can make it cold or make it hot. if it gets hot in here, the temp on my gpu tends to go up :\

my PSU nearly caught fire (even now my room smells of smoke!), thats probably what caused it.

So yeah, thanks for the help! mods can close this now :)
