Concept art realized or console limitation?

Modern warfare 2 is the only game I've played cross-platform that made me feel like I was involved in a large-scale engagement. Gears of War 2, Halo Reach, these games talk big but don't walk the walk. I got the same intensity defending 'REACH' as I did fighting a guerrilla war on Halo, it's ridiculous.

I know the nature of the character means it's solo work with small squad skirmishes but please, when I saw the defense of Central Station boiled down to 2 grunts and a couple of gun-emplacements it felt like more of the same.

Granted Central Station already sustained losses and was in the process of being evacuated but will this always be the case? Especially when your concept artists make beautiful images such as this: http://www.gamesas.com/gallery/concept_art/smoking_ruins_battery_park

It makes me wonder.

It's probably going to be more exciting than what we saw with those old footage. The new trailer, is testament to that, thrilling while killing. Concept art, is just a minor/not to be used material for some games though.

I agree with Ginsu. In Crysis 1 ,when you had grunts with you or when they reinforced some post, it was always 2 or 3 grunts who would be more efficient if they where made from cardboard and left. You never had feeling that you had US Army support or you didn't care because they where extremely inefficient.
IN Warhead you had nanosuit team with you.But that is how grunts should behave not nanoteam (they weren't using the suit at all in gunfight ).
In CoD MW2 you had a feeling that you had a support of bots. Killzone 2 also has this.It makes game lot more immersive.

You hit the nail there Despot_117, it's all about the immersion.

I agree with your comments about the Nanosuit team in Warhead, they didn't use their suit abilities at all although it was still an enjoyable section of the game.

If I see a bunch of infantry and a vehicle or two roll down a street unleashing a hail of fire I'll be happy, something like the infantry advance in that film cloverfield comes to mind.

Maybe, you should concentrate on Crysis 2 possibilities and tests from here on out.

There's always compromises, and we obviously will have seen a fair few extra compromises due to consoles. However, it's unlikely that even with the vastly superior pc tech they could present what they initially imagine without sacrificing graphics (a compromise in itself).

That can only be proven with a precise test amongst us, sadly there's no beta/demo to run on. So will have to settle with theories.

Well, it's very obvious that you can never achieve all you want with a game. The level of compromise however depends on the worst platform you intend to develop for :D

If you imagine a battle that spans the entire of new york, with explosions filling the screen and thousands of troops on screen, then no hardware is going to handle that at this time with decent graphics. So you need to compromise.

For PC you may get a few hundred or so troops fighting on screen with explosions, but on consoles you may only get a couple of dozen absolute maximums. But since the game is made on both platforms, the PC version only gets a few dozen instead of the jaw dropping few hundred. It's the nature of multiplatform, and is what general gets pc enthusiasts backs up.

It's not the extra resolution and AA PC gamers want, it's the better games and worlds that the platform deserves and the developers owe themselves to make. They just have to tell their publisher to feck off trying to milk them for money and make the best game they can make, to hell with some platforms not running it.

I'll just add that the immersion during the MP beta was AWESOME! You can see what appear to be military fighters and helicopters going around the city, while the players battle it out on the roof-tops.

It gave the feeling that these guys were really having their own personal little battle in the middle of a war-zone, very cool! I hope the campaign has stuff like this, this is what I'm talking about, simple touches that make the experience.

I still hope to see some larger scale NPC vs NPC action though but I am hopeful it's there.
