Running Descent or Descent II on modern machines

Post » Fri Mar 06, 2009 9:14 am

Want to run the original Descent and/or DescentII on a modern machine, but getting strange results (jittery movement, sound issues, etc.)?

Try one of the Descent compatibility projects!

Both of the following allow you to run your installed Descent and/or Descent II games with 3D acceleration, sound updates, built-in online play functionality:

DxX-Rebirth: For Descent & Descent II
This one is the choice for those who want the "classic" gameplay. Simple, straightforward.

D2X-XL: For Descent & Descent II
This one is the choice for those who want all the new "bells and whistles". Lots and lots of gameplay features and graphics options.

(Personally, I use both. 8-) )

Enjoy!

I haven't tried it, but I'm told the version from gog.com runs well also... just another option, particulary for those who don't have the game(s) yet.

personally, Rebirth is the most classic way to go. Very FPS friendly as well in my opinion.

We did many Promotion Projekts for Descent3 in the past and we had observed that also Descent 3 becomes more an more Problems to run on modern machines with dual and quadcore CPU′s.
One way to fix that Problem is to disable 1 or 3 of the CPU Cores. Its not the ultimat Fix.. Image

You can have the same looks with D2X-XL, I may be allowed to add.

Plus a faster renderer.

What is classic anyway?

The most classic way of playing a (visually oriented) computer game may be Asteroids, or something like that.

If you refer to gameplay: D2X-XL offers the same gameplay Descent 2 does, and doesn't force anything on you.

So if you want pixelated graphics and monochromatic lighting, go for Rebirth.

If you want colored light, lightmaps and tons of other stuff (not just graphical gimmics), but improvements under the hood, get D2X-XL. :) Oh yeah, btw.: D2X-XL uses two CPU cores if available. Image

Karx is right, XL is eyecandy for sure. However, I've had trouble playing it on my system as of the last update. I'm sure that will be worked out in future versions. Until then I'm playing Rebirth.

D:\d2data\Setup.Exe
This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

My operating system is:-

32 bit operating system
Realtek sound and video card
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Series display

Can you help?
Cheers
