Re-Engineered Game Time System

Post » Mon Aug 10, 2009 6:27 am

I personally always wished I could truly feel as if I lived within Tamriel. One immersion killer for me however was that Oblivion game time could never sync properly with the time of day in the real world.
Too many bugs would occur if you force the game time to work on a 24 hour clock. However, games like World Of Warcraft work very well off of a real life 24hour game clock. So why not add this? It would truly add a new element of immersion! An option would be most preferred as most of us can't afford to quit our day job just to complete a quest.

I want the day and night to not pass so fast. Sure its nice to see sunrise and sun set, but I dont need to see them every 5 minutes. 1:5 is fine. Not 1:20.

A day should be an hour long in the game.

this is a very edgey subject but if possible i'd love for an ingame option at the beginning to choose your settings such as

Start

play

Intro then

Select your game time :
Real Time
Ingame time (maybe another option) but also not include this for time but a lot of other features

I would like the option for both time settings, but what I would really enjoy is the seasonal changes to accompany the calander days of the year (in-game days of course).

As interesting as your idea may sound, I'm having trouble with it for a very simple reason: Waiting and Resting.

For instance: you get a quest from the Assassin's Guild where the target always goes for a walk at midnight. So you'd have to wait till midnight (real time) before you can proceed.

So in my opinion this just wouldn't work. Stretching the real time it takes for a day to pass is one thing, but it would never be possible to keep it syncronized to the real time of day.

The waiting/resting issue aside, another problem I have with the idea is that many people, myself included, can only play the game at certain times of day (usually late night for me, with occasional chances in the mid-afternoon like on weekends). I would HATE to be limited to only playing in a state of nighttime, so I'm very strongly against the idea.

I wouldn't mind if they slowed the day/night cycle down a bit though. Maybe make it like 70% as fast as it was in Oblivion.

Like someone else said, One Day = One Hour. And keep resting.

I find timescale 10 or lower to be perfect.

For me, a 24 hour clock would hurt immersion more than anything. I don't often play for 24 hours at a time, so not being around to see the sun set would make it a bit weird for me. I much prefer being able to watch the sun set at a dramatized-but-still-slow-enough-to-believe-in speed - it's less "realistic", but it's much easier to appreciate the beauty of the world (and, thus, get lost in it) when things are happening fast enough to enjoy.

I think a 2 hour day period would be pretty decent. 1 hour in sunlight, 1 hour in nighttime.

I'd like the day/night cycle to last longer. More time for vampires and thief's to be out.

You can't really compare it to WoW since the only cycle that has is the night and day sky. Nothing else changes.

yeah, I know it was a poor comparison, but I figured it was the easiest way to explain the point as most of us have most likely at least seen WOW

Yeah I thought about that, but I figured if devs are considering our opinions, wouldn't hurt to throw the idea out there. Not sure how much tweaking it would require to alter the system of waiting and resting to coordinate with a 24 hour clock. I suppose it depends on how far along in development they are. But who's to say they will stick with that same wait and rest system?
