SLI FIx

Post » Thu Oct 07, 2010 10:37 am

Hello to everyone. I wanted to create a new thread on this topic since all of the other threads are balls deep with discussion. I read on multiple sites on how to fix this issue. After a few hours of research, swearing, rage quitting, smoking, installing and typing, I was able to fix this issue on my rig.

Here is what I did - I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia. I picked this one - GeForce/ION Driver v270.51. It is a beta driver. Here is the link to get to it.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

It caused a large amount of flickering in game.

I then went and downloaded EVGA's SLI Enhancement. It can be found here. http://www.evga.com/articles/00463/

With this, I still got a large amount of flicker.

The next step that I took was to edit some of the config files in the Crysis 2 folder. The path to it is as follows

C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis 2\system.cfg

To open the system.cfg file, I used notepad++. I edited the line that read r_MultiGPU = 2. I changed it to read as follows

r_MultiGPU = 1

My next step was to create a file called

autoexec.cfg

In this file, I put the following link

r_MultiGPU = 1

I did a restart of my computer and booted up Crysis 2. I run the game at 1920 x 1080 on the Very High setting. Using FRAPS, I am getting around 120 FPS.

I hope this helps everyone that is currently having this problem. I would like to thank every forum post and those people that posted on those forums to help me finally arrive at a fix.

That coding solves the flicker, but doesn't solve the issue. The game is now trying to solo run an SLI system...not going to work right. You're FPS is running at like 120 because you're only using one graphics card. I'm not sure what the issue is...but I do have an idea. I think it has something to do with the overall SLI refresh rate (which would mean that your fix would work). I'm running an SLI system with 2 EVGA GeForce GTX 570s, and a custom refresh rate (62hz) on both. The refresh rate is defined through the NVIDIA software, not through win7, which means that it applies no matter what the condition. I never had screen flicker, and to be honest, I think this is why.

Good luck guys, if I find legitimate info, I'll post it.

So what you are saying is that prior to me doing this is that EVGA precision was not telling the truth with its GPU usage chart? When GPU 1 was pumping at 80 or so percent and GPU 2 was doing next to nothing? Interesting.

I'm not sure XD. What's the chart showing you? I just edited my code to what you said, and it's telling me that the strain on my #2 570 is zero...maybe I'm off?

EDIT*

I just re-read your post, and I think I misread it the first time.

I think the problem is that Crytek did not implement an across-the-board SLI compatibility mode (and if they did, its f*cking them). Meaning that the two cards are not projecting the same image at the same time, causing cross image flickering. I'm not sure if my custom refresh rate is making a difference. If it is, its not because of the hertz I have it set at - it's because my images are passing through graphics software FIRST and being refreshed TOGETHER.

Upon adding the file you mentioned OP, my #2 card turned OFF. Again, it could be due to the custom set-up, but i think it is because the system no longer recognizes my card. Regardless, I've actually been TRYING to get screen flicker ever since I heard of the issue.

I have my sources...I don't want to sound like a walk-in idiot, but I could be XD

My chart is show 8 roughly 80% usage on both of them

I looked at your edit, and I am curious as to what is custom about your setup besides the refresh on your monitors

And no, Crytek did not launch the game with SLI/Crossfire support.

well to begin with, the EVGA GTX 570 runs different than any other kind of GPU. Instead of hauling in one mammoth processor with insane Ghz, it runs 480 mid-grade Ghz processors of its own. It's....finicky to say the least, and it runs different.

I work for a software manufacturing company, that pretty much just centers on performance. We really only make things for server performance (like...networking servers), but this graphics software has been a..."side job" for a while. It basically takes all images that are generated from the GPU, and "smoothes" them by running them through the software. The short of it is: Image rendered by GPU -> software -> monitor. It's basically a giant code to increase shader limits...yeah...not as cool when it sounds like that XD. The whole point is to get maximum graphics without overclocking hardware. It does a LOT of shader meshing, another reason why I think it could be stopping all the flickering. But to be honest, I still can't figure out why the card just shut off...

Uninstall all of the drivers and start with the new ones. I'll believe a fix when its working on my computer.
