Fallout is my favourite. Fallout 2 is good as well, but it's like a watered-down version of the original - bigger but with less substance to it. I'm indifferent on the other spin-offs, I didn't like any of them very much.

For me it would probably be 3 > 2 = 1 > Tactics >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BOS

Not that necessarily 3 is a 'better' game than FO2, but if I go back and play the originals now, I will not enjoy it as much as I remember. No where nearly as much. I am very happy keeping my rose-tinted nostalgia specs on whilst I think about those two; whilst I can sit down and play Fallout 3 and enjoy just about everything in it.
I don't think I would be able to enjoy either Fallout 1 or 2 nowadays in the same way I did in the past, and I don't want to ruin my memories of the game by being frustrated by technical issues.

2>1>Tactics>3>BoS

Yeah, that sounds good.

EDIT: Van Buren is better thn 3, worse than tactics.

I enjoy playing Fallout 3 the most. I have never been much for nostalgia-factor. It is more fun to talk about Fallout 1 and 2, but for playing? 3.

I could talk with someone forever about the Ultima game Savage Empire for all the fun I had when it was "new." But I wouldn't still play it over something more modern. Ditto with Final Fantasy 3. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Fallout 2 is my favorite.. althought it was much more fun when I played it the first time, about 10 years ago. With age, the UI starts to get very frustrating.

However, I still find it better than unmodded F3. Working hard to make modded F3 respectable though...

I'm going to have to go with the original Fallout, it had the best atmosphere I feel. Although I have to admit, becoming a porm super star in Fallout 2 was hilarious.

This is just my opinion... but.

Fallout 1 was the best, the reasons are simply due to the storyline, whilst FO2 improved on every aspect it couldn't top the story of 1.

Fallout 2 was superior in terms of what you could do, for example you had far more control over your NPC's in fallout 2, plus far more weapons were available and many more mods exist for the game (try out www.killap.net restoration project). However like I said the storyline in FO1 was just so much better, it had more of that Mad max theme too it and Junktown was great.

Tactics was a pile of crap, its fun yeah but so much of the storyline from the previous two gets twisted and messed up, for example the calculator and vault 0, the whole Enclave/Vault Tek evil storyline is removed, also the Origins of the Brotherhood of Steel are just "we came out of a vault!" in Tactics, whilst Fallout cannon states they're from the survivors of Mariprosa (You can visit this in FO1 btw, which rocks). ALso things like Petrol/Gasoline are in Tactics and things like WW2 and more modern weapons. Tactics was a pile of crap.

Of course then we have B.O.S ... aka P.O.S, explaining this game is like.... Did you ever play Baldurs gate, then hear about Baldurs gate: Dark alliance?. Basicly its a worthless piece of crap action game.

FO3 is different, it doesnt have the Fallout dark humor which really svcks, nor does it have a convincing storyline, that said its pretty and fun, if Bethesda actually end up making the DLC available to everyone i'll be happy, if they dont then they seriously shouldnt have bought the rights.

I don't think you can compare FO1/2 to FO3. It's like apples to oranges. FO1/2 are definitely great gaming experiences but they're more than 10 years old already and that's an eternity in the gaming world.

The hell does that have to do with anything ? They're all RPGs (to varying degress with the latest one, anyway), so you can still compare them. I'd say Fallout 2 was my favourite, but not much more than Fallout 1
