will GeForce 7900 GTX SLI work with my system?

Post » Sun Aug 16, 2009 7:45 am

Was wondering if GeForce 7900 GTX SLI will work on my system and will it play oblivion on good graphics and not have low FPS atm I have a ATI Radeon X300 series and i can make all the stuff on oblivion look good except the water and grass if i cut water graphic to the high setting i get a small FPS hit and if i have the grass and foilage on the FPS is really low when i go into the woods and such so i was wondering if GeForce 7900 GTX SLI will make it where i can have the grass on high and the water graphics on high and be able to play with a good FPS

Assuming you have an open PCI-E x16 then yes it will work.....however its an older card and was high end about 5 years ago. (Its comparable to the chip in the Xbox360 in performance). Also you have to take the size of the case and the Wattage/Brand of the Power Supply Unit. Is it a slim-line case?

I really dont know it was a custom bilt PC and the case is big and rather old. How might i check to see what kind it is and how do I know if I have PCI-E x16? Also how do I check my power supply?

Please post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista or Win 7, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

Picture of process: http://www.windowsresource.net/cimages/gotodxdiag.jpg

To check power supply, you will have to open up the case and literally look at the unit. It will have a spec sticker. Jot down thesespecs:

-brand and model
-wattage
-amperage value for the +12V spec

And are you getting this 7900GTX for free or something? Because it's not a card to be buying these days.

Yes I was planning on buying it saw it for $130 and was within my budget and i saw it played oblivion real well. Do you think i could get a better one within the $100-175 range if so let me know. :)

Uh, that's overpriced for an old card and yes you can get better newer cards for cheaper these days.

However, you still haven't answered the power supply question. I can't really safely suggest you anything without knowing that.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to give us your motherboard model. You can download and run CPU-Z:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Go to the Mainboard tab and give us the manufacturer and model.

I ask for your motherboard info because it looks to have the G33/G31/P35 Express Chipset, which means you can actually upgrade your processor to something considerably better as well. Right now, your 3.0GHz Pentium 4 is a limiting factor and will just bottleneck most modern video cards.

However, with your limited budget we'll see what can be done after you give us the power supply and motherboard info.

Actually, the BRAND name and the 12 V Amperage are the important things. Meanwhile, the 7900 GTX has gotten old enough that most of the current $70 - $75 Lower priced Mainline graphics cards are faster than it is.

The power supply spec you put is nothing to go on. Gonna need more info...look at what was requested in my previous post.

Depending on what your power supply turns out to be, you could get a new video card and CPU (processor).

A "Raidmax" rated at 450 is about equal to a 200 from a quality name brand. They aren't much good at all.

The original card you asked about (7900GTX) should be off your radar....it's old and the asking price is pretty much double what it's really worth.

As for the PSU, Raidmax is a pretty terrible PSU maker but there are more positive reviews for this unit than I expected. And you can get by with some low power consumption cards. And you really should upgrade the processor too....your current one is gonna hold you back with the card I'm about to suggest.

If you have a Fry's Electronics store near you, they have the E7500 CPU for a low $80...or $88 online:

How might it be held back if I don't get a new processor?

There is a balance that is to be maintained between the CPU and GPU as they work simultaneously with one another and at times somewhat independantly in games. Getting an uber fast graphics card and pairing it with a really slow processor will only get you the benefits that the CPU can muster. Basically, it can't keep up with the video card, thus becoming the bottleneck. Imagine trying to squeeze water out of a bottle....the neck of the bottle only allows so much water to come out. Pentium 4 processors are severely outdated technology and rather inefficient technology. The more modern CPUs are significantly better in terms of work/cycle. The CPU upgrade will be a massive improvement for your performance as well.

But hey, you don't have to get the CPU if you don't want to. I just suggest you to. It'll still run, but the video card may not be performing at its full potential...that's all.
