Console ports of original Crysis and Far Cry

Post » Thu Jun 02, 2011 4:48 pm

I watched a lot of Crysis and FC walkthroughs videos on Youtube and I like those games , especially the tropical jungle settings and the nanosuit, but I'm a console gamer so I cannot play them. Would Crysis port those game for consoles, please ? I'm sure there are many console gamers who would love to play Crysis and/or FC on their consoles.

1. Far Cry *was* ported to consoles.
2. Crysis 1 would blow up both the PS3 and X360.

1. Nah. FC Instinct was made by Ubisoft, and it's a different game.
2. I think Crytek can do it using the new CryEngine 3.

Crytek stated that they tried to port crysis 1 to consoles but in order to run smooth it had to use a visual setting between the PC low and medium and they didn't want to have something looking so "bad" ported over to consoles.

Although im sure that crysis low looks better than cod black ops.

They said the console port would be medium - high.

No, see, that's exactly why C2 has smaller levels and isn't in a jungle, because that would mean it would have to render way too much to work on a console with 512MB RAM. Unless they implemented fog and reduced the draw distance to 50 meters.

And they also said that the consoles run on a mix of medium and low, not a mix of medium and high.

"Porting CryENGINE 2 [was] not as hard as we expected."

Harald Seeley is Crytek's engine business manager, and by his estimation, things couldn't be looking better for his company's venture into console development.

While work on the console version of CryENGINE 2 only began after Crysis shipped in November, it is now in a fully operational state. Graphically it appears somewhere between medium and high detail as compared to Crysis on the PC, and the team hopes to support game worlds as large as those found in its flagship title.

But will Crysis be heading to consoles?

"We're certainly looking at it and considering it," said a tight-lipped Seeley. The studio is currently debating if such a project is the best use of its time. Among its several internal teams--which boast a total of over 200 employees--Crytek is working on at least one other console game, as well as a non-FPS title at its Budapest office.

While Crytek might consider outsourcing Crysis for console development, Seeley noted that any potential client would need to be very talented and be able to meet high expectations.

Crytek won't be getting the console version of CryENGINE 2 to its licensees until later this year. But while we won't be seeing CryENGINE 2-powered console games will not be showing up anytime soon, it's safe to say the company is preparing to make an aggressive foray into the market.

-fail, I thought you were talking about C2-
At any rate, that's a demo of the engine, not the game itself ported.

Crytek did port the console version of CryEngine 2 and that means a port of Crysis is totally possible.

I wouldnt really be too bothered.

The main focus of Crysis was to push the boundries of what a game can do in physics, mechanics and graphics. When you go to consoles, you take a step backwards. At its core, the experience of playing Crysis was fairly dull (at least the singleplayer). Until you get to the alien missions, the levels are pretty repetitive and not too enjoyable. Not to say it was a bad game at all, I really liked it. But when you give that to an audience that really just want to play what you give them, they aint gonna be impressed.

I highly doubt that Crysis is possible on consoles... i dont know where but someone posted an interview with Cevat and he said that the consoles lack of memory makes a game like the first Crysis "impossible" on consoles. All console titles which tried to use a huge draw distance lack the details in wide landscapes.. or why do you think Killzone 3 is set into stinted areas like deserts and ice planets? Crysis 2 was an easier task for Crytek to bring it on consoles, a city offers way more ways to save some demands than a tropical island and a jungle with its wide arears and endless shadows. Just face it .. a game like Crysis with its ultra setting will never appear on current generation consoles.

Cevat already said crysis 1 on consoles is impossible, even on low settings. And the reason is simple, consoles have EXTREMELY low amount of memory. They have 512mb for BOTH the cpu (system) and video card. That's something like 256 / 256. And the huge levels of crysis would make the consoles melt down. A common PC today has 4gb of system memory (memory is extremely cheap nowadays) and a video card with ~1gb of memory. That's a total of 5GB of memory. Compare that with the consoles ... Get it now? If consoles would of had this much memory, we would've had the crysis 2 that it should have been, full city rendered AND a jungle around it ;)
But eh, new consoles coming soon.

I would love to see a Far Cry port. But it is just very difficult to play with a joypad. I am personally playing Far Cry with a xbox360-pad (with xpadder) on pc and it is a tough experience. I have constantly a handicap. They need to come up with a super aiming-response and add a quick 180°-turns-feature to joypad-controls in order to move superior in your environment. Then it could work on lower difficulty for the average crowd.

But since a new control-design is unlikely to happen they would need to make it a different game in order to be playable on consoles. But that would not be Far Cry we all play and love, would it?

I agree, these game would be fantastic to play on consoles. I also prefer the jungle setting to an urban setting.

Just plug in your xbox-pad and start Crysis, do you still agree it is fantastic to play it this way?

I blame the absurd lack of memory on consoles on Sony and MS......they cut it down to save money on production (hell, originally both 360 and ps3 were supposed to have HALF that memory..but that's another story)

1. Far Cry is owned by Ubisoft. Yes, i'd love to see a CE3 version of it, but Crytek doesnt own it so they cant do anything here.
2. lol no. Crysis 1 would cause a nuclear explosion in a console. 2,000,000 polys and over 1.5gb of RAM usage would result in many RROD's / PS3 equivalent.

would be nice if c2 has some sort of throwback levels. i mean, crytek always uses jungles in their tech demos, they gotta have at least a short amount of gameplay in the cry1 island.
