Perks

Post » Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:56 pm

Even if we forget about SPECIAL as such, what do you think about adding perks? Not necessarily on level-up, since there is no such thing in TES, but maybe upon reaching certain skill milestones you'd be able to select one of several perks associated with that skill. We could also have quest perks, and I think the challenge perks from New Vegas are also a great idea.

We learnt new moves at certain combat skills anyway.

I don't want this to become "fallout with magic" :P

I don't think it will become "Fallout with magic" if you introduce a few mechanics like perks, which are pretty much universally liked by gamers, as they allow you to customize your character more. Not anymore so than Fallout 3 is "Oblivion with guns". And there are equivalents of perks in a lot of other franchises, e.g. the feats in D&D.

This has already been discussed... and not a lot of people want perks... This is Elder Scrolls, not Fallout 3...

Man you are headstrong on adding Fallout into Oblivion. :P

I guess perks could, and i'm using this very loosely here, be cool if done right. Maybe having a perk that ups your chance of finding more gold on leveled enemies loot?

As I said, perks are not something Fallout-specific nor SPECIAL-specific. A lot of other games have successfully used similar mechanics, among them many fantasy ones. Special abilities like that simply give you more options to customize your character.

Converting the stat system to SPECIAL is maybe going to far, but I don't see how adding perks is. D&D only added feats, which are basically perks, in the 3rd edition, and they've proven to be immensely popular among D&D players. Would you also say that they shouldn't have done it for D&D because it's not Fallout?

Ros, you lost 78 to 1 in an hour in one thread. It was about adding Fallout to TES. Don't continue your quest to pollute the Elder Scrolls.

Perks are cool yes. But I don't know if they would fit into TES. If done right I don't see any problem at all, but in the way perks were used in Fallout I don't want it in Skyrim. So a big maybe

I want perks. Not at level-up, but as quest rewards, and special moves available from trainers, and achieving things in-game. Also... faction-perks.
And there should be a lot to choose from (and a lot that you would not be able to get), so you could get a really unique character.

It was about replacing the whole system by the Fallout one. And perks would not replace anything, they would simply add to the experience and give you more character customization options. And, as I said, they are not something that's specific to Fallout. If anything, it's silly not to add them just because they're also in another franchise.

Races, birthsigns, and classes should be enugh.

These are things that you choose at character creation, while perks allow you to customize your character more along the way.

I'm fine with with the 'perks' we receive on level up with our skills (Novice, Apprentice, etc.) although I wouldn't mind if they added something like http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1149252-perk-selection-instead-of-automatically-given-at-a-skill-level/

Yes, that's part of what I'm talking about too. I don't see how that doesn't fit Elder Scrolls.
