Another ANOTHER windows 7 crash!

Post » Sat Aug 22, 2009 3:29 pm

Okay, so I know the guys at Bethesda don't come here to help up, despite our griping and whining, but I decided to post my own issues to perhaps find a commonality on the other folks getting the crash issues.
Basically, every 5-30 minutes the game will randomly freeze, requiring a three-finger salute to kill the process.

This is what windows says:

The program Fallout3.exe version 1.7.0.3 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
Process ID: 15d0
Start Time: 01cb3acac5f39b74
Termination Time: 410

Since I've already bombarded you with useless info (for the most part) I'll save you time and not worry about dxdiag. I'm convinced there is something that all of us on Win7 have in common (May or may not be the OS) that is causing this issue: Prior I was on Windows XP with only one HD4670 and a P4 (Cedar Mill) with DDR400 RAM, and didn't have this issue.

Windows 7 x64
ASRock P45X3
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @2.5GHz
5GB DDR3 RAM
ATI HD4670 x2 (Crossfire)

Have you tried the 'Quad Core Fix'? FO3 doesn't play nice at all with mult-core CPUs. CTDs/Freezes are common with FO3 on multi-core systems. The Quad Core Fix forces the game to use only 2 cores, which increases the stability of the game.

Prior I was on Windows XP with only one HD4670 and a P4

The P4s were a single logical core. If you enabled Hyper Threading it would read 2 logical cores.
-----------------------------------------

Now you have an: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @2.5GHz
This might be read as having 4 logical cores. So I'd suggest trying the fix.
-----------------------------------------

How-to:
Locate the file:
Vista/Win7: Users>Username>Documents>My Games>Fallout3>FALLOUT (Configuration Settings)
XP: Documents and settings>Username>My Documents>My Games>Fallout3>FALLOUT (Configuration Settings)

**Do Not edit/alter the: Fallout_default ini located here: Program Files>Bethesda Softworks>Fallout 3>Fallout_default**

Open the file using Wordpad.

Change the entry: bUseThreadedAI=0 To: bUseThreadedAI=1

Right under that add this entry: iNumHWThreads=2

Exit, save the changes. Try the game out and see if it resolves the issue.

Thanks for trying to help X)

It actually seemed to work, but, sadly, it happened again.. tch.. It lasted a fair bit longer than before, but that might've just been dumb luck.

Seeing the issues other folks are having, it seems to be a windows 7 issue. Ah well, guess I have to keep tapping F5 every 5 minutes... X)
