One Unhappy Customer

Hi,

I just want to voice my opinion here, and I know that most don't care and that's ok, but I do want the folks at Bethesda Softworks to know that I purchased Morrowind, was unhappy at it's lack of support for a gamepad.

Then purchased Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, which had EXCELLENT support for my XBOX 360 controller for Windows, so I thought I'd the Elder Scrolls another try and purchased Oblivion.

Just want to get my voice out there that I won't be purchasing another Elder Scrolls release since for whatever reason you do not support easy use of gamepads.

I don't understand the insanity of these PC gamemakers who think using the keyboard is what, macho??? You can brag you played a game that was plainly made for a gamepad on a keyboard. Good for you. Why?

Games are supposed to be FUN. It is not fun to play today's game's with a keyboard for most of us. I hope you'll consider that in any future games.

Let me see if I understand you. You're criticizing a company for not supporting a gamepad with products they developed 9 and 5 years ago, respectively. You like ("EXCELLENT") the gamepad support they provided in much more recent games. So because they didn't provide it way-back-when, you won't buy any games of theirs in the future.

Is that correct?

The XBOX 360 is only a few months older than Oblivion-I doubt that Bethesda had time or considered its use,or changing the PC gameplay at the last minute to accomodate its controller.
And maybe a patch wouldn`t cut it either-the interface on the PS3 version is certainly quite different from the PC version-I`ve played both (A LOT) and the PC controls seem much easier. Maybe I`m all thumbs.
I`m sure Skyrim will be more geared towards gamepads-as a lot of games seem to be nowadays-From my perspective,I hope that doesn`t take anything away from the gameplay.Because for me,it might make it tougher.

Your post makes no sense whatsoever.

As someone who has played Oblivion on both the PC and the Xbox 360, I found the controller as easy to play Oblivion than the mouse and keyboard.

If you want to voice your concern. Please be a lot more specific...

But to put your mind at rest on the subject of Skyrim. The game is being ported to PC via the Consolses, meaning it's primarilly going to be designed for consoles, and adjusted for use on PCs. Which means it'll be designed to play on a gamepad before it's adjusted for use on mouse and keyboard.

Don't write off a series of games which from Arena to Oblivion are all excellent just because you have problems playing it on a gamepad, thats just an extreme overreaction.

Your complaint is completely irrational, and I think these last two lines sum that up really well. What on earth would make you think that others think playing on a keyboard is "macho," why would you think anyone brags about playing on a keyboard, and the fact that what makes a game fun for you or not rests solely on whether it uses a gamepad or a keyboard to play it on. All of that is just silly and ridiculous.

Also, as already pointed out, you're faulting Morrowind and Oblivion when they were released 9 and 5 years ago, respectively, while praising FO3 and FONV when they were released well after Oblivion. Just because you don't acknowledge how technology progression works, doesn't mean the product is at fault.

I'd also recommend giving keyboards a chance instead of just writing them off because they're different. Sure, they take a little getting used to when you're used to using a controller, but honestly, I would much rather play TES and similar games on a keyboard than a controller. I'd rather play most games with a keyboard, honestly, save for obvious exceptions like fighting games ala Street Fighter where it's functionally inferior.

Doesn't support a steering wheel and pedals either. And IMHO a gamepad makes as much sense for this kind of game as those would.

Totally agree with OldFatGuy about feeling macho when Ive got a mouse & keyboard in front of me. Who needs a Corvette or a Burt Reynolds movie when a Pentium processing system can have the same effect?

AFAIK if DirectX recognizes the device in your controller configuration in Windows Control Panel, you should be able to use it in Oblivion. There is also a setting in the Oblivion.ini file (found in My Documents/ My Games/ Oblivion/ ) labeled "bUse Joystick=", make sure it's set to 1 ("bUse Joystick=1"). If it's set to zero, that means joystick support was turned off.

It's been along time since I played Morrowind but does anyone know if Morrowind's INI file had a similar setting in it somewhere?

In the mean time, have a look at these threads on controller/ joystick support. They may have some workable solutions for you.

Gamepad definitely not needed. If anything, a special keyboard and mouse. Bioware is doing this for the new Star Wars MMORPG.
