Hd5870 low fps?

Post » Fri Jun 24, 2011 3:22 pm

Hi,
I believe i'm having performance issues due to my fps. My system specs are :
HD5870
Intel i7 2600
8GB ram
60gb SSD
750GB hDD
windows 7 64bit
i am getting around 50-60fps inside with vsync on(extreme settings) , but as soon as i go outside or into any kind of action it goes down to about 40-50 or sometimes in heavy battles 30-40.
I would settlewith these framerates if it weren't for my brother getting 50-60fps constantly on extreme with his gtx 275.
He only has 4gb ram and his cpu is ok (don't know exact model) but doesn't compare to my i7
Any ideas on why my fps is low or why his is high? (we both have the latest drivers)

I've got a heavily overclocked 5870PCS++ .. got 60-70FPS without VSYNC enabled :)
Up2Date drivers installed?

Have tried with Vsync both on and off, not really any noticeable difference. I have the latest drivers, just checked.

Maybe you just need to clean your PC up. Whenever my PC is slow, I use Advanced System Care and Smart Defrag. Both are from Iobit. They speed my games and PC up in no time. fragmented files really gets to your games.

I have a 6970, and after patch 1.8 my game is ****. I know its not my rig, because on earlier versions of this game it dominates it. They **** up with the patch somehow, hopefully 1.9 will fix this..sigh.

That card can only really handle extreme settings are a small resolution (sub 1080).

Hmmm.. actually, both you and your brothers FPS seem low to me. I don't know much about the 5870's performance though, so I can say. I used to own a GTX 275 too, @ the time when I had it, it was a very decent graphics card, especially for dx9 based games.

Thing you forgot to mention though.. was the "screen resolution" you are running at.. that FPS may be perfectly normal, just depends what your res is. You play at 1400 x 900? 1400 x 1050? 1600 x 900? Higher? Lower? I have 1600 x 900 and get between 68 fps to 114 fps, depending on map, gun battles, lighting, etc.. I've gone even higher than 114 fps, typically though when I watch my FPS using MSi AfterBurner, it's usually in the mid 80's.

I use 1920x1080 for my resolution, i realised having it at this may be the cause so i tried a lower res (1280 1024) and got around 133max but still down to 50ish sometimes in large firefights. I haven't noticed lowering the resolution to give a difference of 80-90 fps in any other games. My 1920x1080 fps seems odd. My brother does indeed use a lower resolution which explains his greater performance.

HD5870 is not high-spec? Since when?? His GPU and CPU are top-notch. The issue is elsewhere!!!

A reinstall of the game or maybe even windows also could be the best way to know for sure.

Had the hd5870 for a while with an older very weak cpu, ram etc which were bottlenecking my system thus i upgraded them. Didn't really think i'd need to upgrade cards for a while, i know hd5870 isn't top notch now but other people having higher framerates than mine with the same card means it can't just be due to the card not being up to the task.

True not top now , but one of the top and thinking going crossfire but not sure yet.

As soon as i put one of these in my rig it started painting rainbows in the living room and golden rain decended from the clouds floating across my celing.

The 5870 is still pretty good, is about 9-14th depending which benchmarks you are looking at, its a generation old and thats up against multi-gpu graphics cards, you'd probably have to go to 6950 to get a decent upgrade. '

hmm I can get a 6970 for 370-400. I could go for the ASUS 6970 OC if I had a good enough reason

Or you could flash a 6950 to a 6970. I heard that works well and is $100 odd cheaper.

HD 5870 is a good card, but it is far too old to still be calling it 'top-notch'. I agree the problem is probably elsewhere, but my post made no comment on the source of his problem, only that there is a discrepancy between the spec of his GPU and the rest of his components.

I don't know if you overclock OP, but if you do I'm told you can get GTX570 performance. It'll run a little 'warm' but it's probably one way to sidestep your problem.

After a reinstall of the game and turning off hardware acceleration my fps seems to have improved slightly, i get 60fps more often (vsync on) but it still drops dramatically at certain points, for example when walking through the city looking in a certain direction will cause it to go from around 53 to 39. My card is ever so slightly overclocked... to 900mhz gpu clock Via amd overdrive. In most battles it is in the 40s, is this normal for an hd5870? if anyone else with an 5870 could comment it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the replies thus far.

Immediately after reinstallng i tried it with no patches and then compared the fps to what i got with 1.8 - There was no significant fps difference if any difference at all.
