How would you want to see in-game "romance" handled?

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:00 am

Mass effect romance & friendship was 100% a side thing. When at the ship between missions you had the chance to talk to the myriad of followers, who may or may not comment on the last mission (depending on the importance of said mission), or may go off with generic dialogue, or go with a special dialogue of sorts that revealed a little more deep about the character. With two of them this could end in romance, if you played nice with both, you'd also get a special cutscene/dialogue where both of them (now rather jealous), would come to you and ask you to choose.
The whole point of the thing was simply giving more deep to the followers.

Almost exact same thing for KOTOR btw. And in NWN it traded ship for an inn in neverwinter (basically the place where you left the leftover followers).

As for the people going EWWW! with the straight/gay/les thing. Please grow up. Any half decent romance mod won't push you with a 'have six' line with same gender characters. That's what prostitution mods made by 12yearolds are for. In fact, any half-decent romance/friendship mod will bury such option (and the romance one for straight too) deep enough that you'd have to dedicate a few hours of gameplay for it.
[censored] is a whole other issue, it's non-consensual, it's not 'hot' no matter how much it says so in cheap jap porm, it's a terribly disturbing thing and it's a trigger for many. Specially females. If you do wish to include it, for the sake of sensible persons please don't advertise it grandly or put it straight as a first option. Bury it a little so the player isn't faced with the direct choice on first page.

I'm not sure I would consider that choice any worse than, say, finding Brian Wilks a home or selling him into slavery. Or fixing/detonating Megaton. Or who you side with at Tenpenny...no wait, that one ends in a massacre no matter what. I think what he's saying is a romance quest should have an option for the totally amoral psychopath, as it goes for most things Fallout. Can't say I disagree, though it wouldn't do me much good as I tend to play at least morally neutral characters.

Thank you!

I enjoy playing the psychopath types. My current female character is called Little Miss Slave as opposed to Little Miss Sunshine, LMS is a cold father-[censored] and she's insane and selfish. Collecting empty soda bottles in a post-apoclyptic era.... hehe...

If there's romance (awww) then there MUST be [censored] (bad!) also... Otherwise.... my mind will crumble into dirty socks with a hint of bananas.

Mod should be called having a little R n' R. Romance and [censored].

As for how the romance should be undergone... "Hey bebbeh, wanna' earn some cash? Is your daddy around?"

*psychopath mode off*

The Psycho is really sick since he's not going after the bebbeh, but the father... :P

Full frontal male nudity is mandatory.

Do you mean me, or in the game?

Could you give me a brief run-down?

Nah.

I'm just not comfortable with the idea.

Your last 4 posts, in order... and on the topic of romance... hehehe
Jara... that is just too funny! Specially the "brief run-down" and "not comfortable with the idea".

Ok.. I'm tired.. punchy tired.
7am and I haven't slept yet. ;)

If full frontal male nudity is out of the picture, some platonic bromance must be added.

If it's not going to happen for male, then at least make it the same for female. Equality is good. Discrimination is not.
When it comes to male anything all the prudes and 12 year olds pop up from nowhere, yet when it's regarding females apparently it's perfectly fine
Nah.

Glad you agree.
Too many kids around this entire forum make jokes about it and think the word (and the action) is 'cool' to use. It's not, and never will be. Wait until it happens to you (Arkayer) then you won't think it's so cool and fun. It doesn't just happen to girls. I'm, thankfully, not speaking from personal experience but I am female and find the idea of portraying it in a mod offensive :stare:

For me a romance related mod would have to be romantic, not walk up to somebody and get a dialog tree full of six positions. For clues as to what is "romantic", pick up a movie or book since I think few games have ever had meaningful relationships of any kind (love, six, family, duty).

I'm better off stating my pet peves as things to avoid:

1) I dislike games where only females are open for relationships, so you have to either play as a straight guy or a lisbian. I dont think your character should have to state their sixuality but if a player intends to play as a straight, gay or bi person of either gender there should be something there for them. The Sims handles this pretty well by not passing any sort of judgement or making any statements.
2) Relationships should not be a reward, it should be a responsability you take on because it suits your character. "Maybe" you could get a perk similar to well rested from spending time with the person you are involved with, but making her/him a cow you can infinitely milk with no repercussion is not really all that special.
3) Keep references to six abstract, the more you specify, the more you sound like a 13 year old. I rather a sitcom "they lie down and the lights go out" over some clumsy dialog or awful animations.

100% Agree with TGBlank and MystyStar

I would really only care for a mod if it was done maturely and seriously and equally. There's plenty of those other tasteless stuff mods anyways.

For the OP.

Anyone who says "EWWWWWWWW" for your mod, doesn't deserve to download them.

I was joking around, see the post before that one.

Joke? I'm not the one joking.

I can't be offended so I won't mind seeing it in a mod.

Also, I'm not a kid.

When was that cool?

What I've seen in some of the places I've been make me state:

Please, for the love of all decency;

do.NOT.include.[censored] :stare:

unless you are allowing the character to be victimized, but as a proactive action on the characters part it should be beneath any characters morals, no matter how 'evil' their character is.

as for romance and love interests, I'm all for it :) Even 'evil' people fall in love -and usually don't go through life considering themselves 'evil' BTW. But you are in for a powerful amount of scripting.
-finding a bunch of flowers in the wastelands could be a massive quest all be itself, let alone chocolates!!! :P

First there have to be places of interest for each of the candidates to be taken to.
out of those their have to be places preferred by the candidate -so that it doesn't boil down to taking each one to the same place over and over, all though that would be on par with RL :D

Besides locations there have to be activities that are location free that may be pursued as well
again, out of the choice of activities, each candidate will have a number of favorites

..and with each following candidate you compound the amount of work to be done. This gets big, quick.
you might want to ask permission from other authors whether you can borrow their location mod for 'dates'

Mods-r-us casino:
"Hey dollface, wanna cruise down to CJ's, the roulette wheel is calling and daddy needs a new pair of shoes"

500 Rads Bar:
"I just heard of this new club that's opening.. Wanna go cut a rug?"

Flying Dutchman :D
"Hey baby, I just won two tickets for and all expense paid holiday cruise to the Mediterranean. Think of it: you, me and all the banana dacaris served in coconut shells with those little umbrellas you can drink.."

as you can see, I'm sort of one sided with dialogue :embarrass:
In any case, this kind of thing goes is deeply complex when done right, so plan out everything first:
Dates, their outcome, consequences of that outcome etc..

Acolyte hates blind dates.. because then he can't take them to the movies*
*he also realizes the former statement might be somewhat insensitive to blind people, but is confident they don't often frequent these forums.. too much.
beside, no one goes on a visually challenged date, do they?

SNIP

I can imangine one of the dates, the (first?) date (a quest basicly) called 'Date #1 and #2' (number one and number two)

The player invites their date whether male or female to a romamtic dinner at [new location], but the player doesn't know the [new location] is actually a dark, moist and really disgusting restroom with two chairs and the only light source is a cord with a light bulp hanging too low (head height when sitting one on of the chairs. Of course your date isn't too happy about the location of the date but You'll eat your dinner and sitting in awkward silince.

Decorations are toilet the very bad ones, IE the ones that usually comes with a biohazard sign (a few in the restrooms in Megaton) or those that are broken.

REWARD: You leave the restroom without permanent scars on your soul.

#EVIL NOTE# Maybe you could ?inject? some Jet or some other chem into your date's dinner/drink and "skip" the quest, more specificly the awkward silence/conversations, for some negative karma.

Should make a fun quest and MAYBE an interesting start to the romanace.

Ark, could you please stop it? seriously, it is disturbing at best, triggering at worse. I don't care if that's what you fantasize about, i don't want to know. So could you please not post it and send it through PMs or hide it on spoiler tags or anything NOT IN A DAMN PUBLIC FORUM? yes?. OP already stated he's not comfortable with the idea. Stop pushing the subject.

I don't fantasize about it, that would be.... well, strange, I guess. But if you talk about the post about that "quest thing" I don't see what's wrong with it.
